Hiking Among Hills and Themes

Lebach lies in the gently rolling Saar-Nahe uplands, whose elevations range from 210 to 460 metres. The Höchsten area near Steinbach includes the highest elevations in the district of Saarlouis; Lindenberg reaches 460.6 metres in the Höchster Forest. The Lebach area offers cycling and hiking tours with varying levels of challenge and difficulty. The landscape invites you to choose according to route length and interests, from geological themes to trails with cultural and historical stops.

Trails Through History and Geological History

Allow around four hours for the moderately difficult “Through the Centre of Saarland” route, which is 14 kilometres long. Five information boards cover cultural and historical topics. The route also passes parts of a Westwall bunker and 18th-century boundary stones.

The Kaltensteinpfad Dream Loop is an 8.04-kilometre moderately difficult circular hike around the Hoxberg. It passes historic boundary stones dating from before the French Revolution. The Kaltensteine are a conglomerate formation of the Rotliegend, which formed around 270 million years ago. Along the trail, a viewpoint in the forest offers views over Lebach and towards the Schaumberg.

For planning your day, the routes offer clear contrasts: the 14 kilometres of the “Through the Centre of Saarland” route combine with cultural and historical stops, while the Kaltensteinpfad is a shorter loop with viewpoints and boundary stones. At 3.5 kilometres, the Haifischpfad is shorter still and focuses on lake deposits and Lebach eggs.

The 3.5-kilometre Haifischpfad starts at the Birkenhof in Lebach-RĂĽmmelbach and passes through deposits of a 290-million-year-old freshwater lake. Nine information boards explain the Lebach eggs. The trail is named after the shark fossil Lebachacanthus.

The Prims-Theel Adventure Trail is considered family-friendly and largely accessible; it is also connected to the statewide cycling network. During opening hours, visitors can see an extensive exhibition of the Lebach eggs at Lebach Town Hall.

Saarlouis: Fortress City and Weekly Market

Saarlouis offers a distinct perspective on fortress history: Louis XIV had the city built as a fortress city in 1680. Parts of the former fortifications have been preserved in a recreational area. Vauban Island offers views of the old Saar river arm and the fortress complex. These themes differ from the boundary stones and geological traces along Lebach’s hiking trails.

The Saarlouis weekly market takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the pedestrian zone in front of the Kommandantur. The stalls also include products from regional producers; check the opening times before your visit.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Lebach is accessible by car and public transport, including bus, train and Saarbahn. This makes it easy to plan your search around the kind of day you have in mind.
