Wallerfangen: Saargau, Tunnels and Culture
Accommodation in Wallerfangen
Wallerfangen combines the Saargau landscape with a rich and varied history. Forests, extensive orchards and rural villages shape the scenery, while Bunter sandstone and shell limestone create distinctive rock formations. There are also hiking trails, a Lorraine farmhouse and traces of history ranging from the Hallstatt period to Roman mining.
Hiking trails and active days
Three named premium hiking trails give route planning a clear local focus: the Hirn-Gallenberg-Tour in Rammelfangen, the Gisinger in Gisingen and the Grenzblickweg in Leidingen. The three Wallerfangen trails are part of the Saar-Hunsrück premium hiking region’s Traumschleifen network. The Vauban Trail also passes through parts of the municipality of Wallerfangen.
Wallerfangen’s outdoor swimming pool has four pools: a diving pool, a sports pool, a non-swimmer pool and a paddling pool. This makes swimming easy to plan as a dedicated activity during your stay. Facilities and operating conditions may change, so check the latest information before planning a visit. Other leisure activities associated with Wallerfangen include cycling, golf, camping, tennis, fishing and model aircraft flying. Tandem skydives and skydiving lessons are offered at Düren airfield. Check dates and booking options in advance.
Haus Saargau and early history
Haus Saargau is one of the few surviving Lorraine farmhouses in Saarland. The rural museum presents historical country life through 18th-century furnishings, farm buildings and a traditional kitchen garden. The interior, farm buildings and garden show rural life from different perspectives. If you plan a museum visit, check current visitor information, as exhibitions and access arrangements may change.
Wallerfangen’s industrial history also has a clear historical landmark: a ceramics factory was founded in 1791 in Vaudrevange, then part of France. Limberg was a princely seat during the Hallstatt period. The surviving ramparts and ditches date from the 6th or 7th century and add another historical dimension to the site.
The Hansenberg inscription beside the tunnel entrance is considered the only surviving Latin inscription of its kind north of the Alps. It suggests that Emilianus owned the mine. At Sudelfels, a path leads to the freely accessible temple complex; local trail conditions may vary.
Ways to visit the mines
In the district of St. Barbara, guided visits take you through an untouched Roman mine tunnel where azurite was extracted. Check dates and booking conditions in advance for these tours.
The Upper Emilianus Tunnel is accessible to registered visitor groups. Check availability in advance before planning a visit.
Another historical highlight: Saarlouis
Saarlouis offers a historical highlight of its own: Louis XIV had the city built as a fortified town in 1680. Parts of the former fortifications have been preserved in a recreational area. The Grand Place in Saarlouis is now used as a car park and event venue.
