Saarwellingen: Hiking Trails, Wildlife Enclosure and Culture
Accommodation in Saarwellingen
An extensive network of hiking and cycling trails leads through the vast forest areas of Saarwellingen. Historic sites, nature spots and cultural attractions complement time spent outdoors and offer different ways to shape your trip.
Hiking between ravines and history
The hiking trails include the Saar-Mosel Trail, the Hoxberg Trail, the Prims Hiking Trail, the Saar-Hochwald Trail and the “Around Saarwellingen” circular trail. There are also shorter circular trails of 17.5, 12 and 13.5 kilometres. The 9.8-kilometre Mühlenbach Gorge Tour offers a distinctive landscape feature: its main attraction is the Mühlenbach Gorge. The starting and finishing point is the Hoxberg-Alm shelter. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
The Saarwellingen Historical Walk is about eight kilometres long and divided into three sections. It opened in 2025; check the current signage before your visit. Together with the gorge tour and shorter circular trails, it offers different ways to weigh up distance and theme.
Explore the landscape by bike or on foot
The Around Saarwellingen routes can be explored by bicycle or on foot. They lead through forests, past streams and ponds, and along boundary stones, chapels, grottoes and the Wolfsrath Wildlife Enclosure. The full route around Saarwellingen, Schwarzenholz and Reisbach is 35 kilometres long. It also reaches the outdoor swimming pool, a Kneipp facility, shelters, inns and excursion restaurants with beer gardens. Before your visit, check whether the listed facilities and dining options are available.
The boundary-stone hiking trail around Schwarzenholz leads through forests and meadows to viewpoints and historic sites. It features almost 50 historic boundary stones, many of which date back to 1777. The historic boundary stones around Saarwellingen are protected cultural monuments.
Wolfsrath: trails, animals and water
At the “Wolfsrath” Wildlife Enclosure, well-maintained walking paths pass four animal enclosures. The species found there include alpacas, ibex, Ouessant sheep, red deer, fallow deer and sika deer. Trail conditions and animal populations may change. Two lakes, formed by the Wildbach stream, are also part of the wildlife enclosure’s circular route.
The Wolfsrath-Helden Trail is a family-friendly circular route in the wildlife enclosure, combining puzzle and play stations with themes relating to local wildlife. It starts at the car park of the “Wolfsrath” Wildlife Enclosure. Parking availability and the content of the stations may change. The large loop of the accessible Saarwellingen walking trail also passes the wildlife enclosure. There you can observe fallow deer and goats in their natural surroundings; viewing conditions vary.
Culture and traces of the past
The Old Town Hall houses a cultural centre offering concerts, small-scale theatre, cabaret, talks and courses. Programme details may change. The Leo-Grünfeld House offers another perspective on local history: Saarwellingen’s Jewish community used it as a school from 1907 to 1936.
Labacher Hof is situated in a meadow valley on the road between Saarwellingen and Reisbach and was first documented in the 13th century. The historic archway of Saarwellingen Castle was reconstructed in spring 2003. Places like these add specific historical points of interest to the hiking trails.
Routes with different profiles
The “Am Steinberg” Nordic Walking Park offers three routes of varying difficulty: the easy Schwimmbadweg, the intermediate Wolfsrathweg and the difficult Steinbergweg. The park can be accessed from Neuer Kirchplatz or from the car park at Saarwellingen’s outdoor swimming pool. Signage and parking availability may change. When planning your trip, the published trail lengths, the different route profiles and the cultural attractions can help you decide how to spend your days.
