Rehlingen-Siersburg stretches from the Saar across the Nied Valley and the Gau to the French border. River scenery, wooded hills, agricultural plateaus and cultural heritage lend a stay a variety of distinctive touches. You can focus on cycling, hiking or architectural and cultural history. When choosing accommodation, it therefore helps to consider which experiences you want to shape your trip: a bike ride, a particular hiking trail or exploring historic sites.

River scenery and routes through the region

The Nied has good water quality and flows through a largely unspoilt river landscape. The river and the wider Nied area also provide opportunities for recreation. The Nied offers good living conditions for many fish species and is also associated with fishing. The hiking area along the Nied and Saar includes valley floors, wooded hills and agricultural plateaus. Rivers and valleys sit alongside both wooded and more open landscapes.

Cyclists will find more than 140 kilometres of cycling routes spread across five tours, including routes that cross the French border. The options cater to beginners, experienced cyclists, mountain bikers and leisure cyclists. This means there are different riding styles to choose from. If you are looking for accommodation based on your planned activities, consider whether you want to focus on leisurely days out by bike, more challenging rides or mountain biking.

Hiking routes can also be chosen according to specific differences. The Druidenpfad in Niedaltdorf is a premium hiking trail about six kilometres long, designed to be family-friendly. It leads to a reconstructed Celtic farmstead and a Celtic burial mound, combining exercise with Celtic history. The Idesbachpfad in Itzbach is about 18 kilometres long and includes sections that challenge experienced hikers. The two trails therefore offer different hiking options: an explicitly family-friendly route with Celtic points of interest, or a longer tour with challenging sections.

Four themed hiking trails are named the Panoramaweg, Ammonitweg, Gau-Niedtalweg and Fledermauspfad. Together with the Druidenpfad and Idesbachpfad, they offer a range of starting points for planning your day. The known lengths and levels of difficulty can help you choose a route that suits the distance you want to hike.

Architecture, history and views

Schloss Fremersdorf is a Baroque palace complex built around a courtyard from 1775 onwards. The palace near the Saar in Rehlingen is associated with the noble von Hausen family. In Siersdorf, St. Willibrord’s Chapel is recognised as an important historic monument; the same is true of the parish church and palace in Itzbach. These buildings offer different architectural points of reference for the community’s cultural history.

At Siersberg Castle, a historic landmark comes together with expansive views: the keep dates from the 14th century, and the surviving tower is just under 14 metres high. From the tower, visitors can look out over the Saar and Nied valleys and see the Lorraine hills to the west. The view takes in both valleys and extends westward, while the keep itself offers a visible reminder of the castle’s history.

Visitor information for the river and cave

The Niedaltdorf stalactite cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour. For the 2026 season, visitors are asked to book online in advance; spontaneous visits generally cannot be accommodated. Check the latest visitor information before travelling so that you can plan around the guided tour.

Non-motorised watercraft on the Nied are subject to a ban every year from 15 March to 30 June. A ban also applies when the water level at Niedaltdorf is below 30 centimetres. So, in addition to the fixed period, the water level also matters. If you are planning a paddling trip, check the applicable visitor regulations and relevant conditions beforehand.
