Völklingen combines an exceptionally well-preserved industrial site with cycling and hiking opportunities. At its heart is the Völklingen Ironworks: covering six hectares, it is a unique monument to pig iron production in Western Europe. It is considered the only fully preserved ironworks in the world from the heyday of industrialisation and the first industrial monument of this era to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Discover Industrial History

The site has been largely preserved in its original condition. Since the works ceased production in 1986, there have been only minor additions or demolitions. The complex is used as a museum and hosts cultural events and exhibitions. Highlights along the visitor route include huge machines in the Blower Hall, six blast furnaces in the freely accessible Ironworks Park, and the distinctive inclined lift.

The stele trail through the city centre offers a different perspective on the city. It connects six central attractions, starts at the Völklingen Ironworks, and provides brief historical information in three languages. So, alongside the extensive industrial complex, the itinerary can also include other city attractions.

Cycling Routes with Different Highlights

The Saar Cycle Route runs through Völklingen, parallel to the Saar, towards its confluence at Konz, and is considered easy. The Köllertal Cycle Route follows a former railway line from Völklingen to Püttlingen and onwards via Heusweiler to Mangelshausen. It is approximately 21 kilometres long and is considered easy to moderately difficult. The two routes therefore differ in character: the Saar Cycle Route follows the river, while the Köllertal Cycle Route follows the former railway line.

Another signposted route is the Völklingen City Circuit. It covers 56 kilometres and starts and ends at Völklingen Old Station. Signposting and trail conditions can change; check both before setting out.

Forest Trails and the Warndt

There are more than 200 kilometres of signposted hiking trails in the forests around Völklingen. The Warndt is also home to the 42-kilometre cross-border Huguenot Cultural Trail. The Warndt Forest stretches southwest of Völklingen towards France. Walks through the forest may offer far-reaching views towards Lorraine; visibility depends on conditions.

Plan Your Visit and Accommodation

The Völklingen Ironworks is a five-minute walk from Völklingen railway station. Most areas of the World Heritage Site are accessible via ramps and lifts; the observation platform at a height of 45 metres is an exception. Guided tours of the ironworks and its exhibitions are offered in German, English, French, Italian, Greek, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, and sign language. If accessibility or a particular tour is important to your plans, check the conditions and availability before your visit.

On-site facilities include a café in the water tower and a beer garden. Check in advance to see what is currently open. If the World Heritage Site is your main focus, the short walk from the railway station is also a useful point of reference.
