Industrial heritage, Baroque architecture, forests and trails give the Saarbrücken Regional Association a varied character. Between technical monuments, historic sites and green destinations, you can choose different priorities for your trip. This is especially evident along the Völklingen Ironworks’ extensive visitor route, in Saarbrücken’s buildings, and in the opportunities for walks, hikes and bike rides.

Industrial heritage and historic traces

In Völklingen, a visitor route more than 7,000 metres long leads through the Völklingen Ironworks. The route passes through the Möller Hall and climbs to a viewing platform at the blast furnace. This allows you to experience the industrial monument not only as a striking complex, but also as a testament to industrial heritage and the history of technology in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In December 1994, UNESCO declared the Völklingen Ironworks a World Heritage Site in Saarland.

Quierschied, too, has a former industrial site that reflects structural change: the former Göttelborn mine features surface facilities, old headframes and a mighty winding tower. In Bildstock, the Rechtsschutzsaal is considered the birthplace of the trade union movement in the Saar region. Both places offer a window onto different chapters of regional history.

Baroque architecture and city history in Saarbrücken

In Saarbrücken, visitors can descend into the underground castle complex from the Middle Ages and Renaissance and explore the casemates. The building’s history goes back further: a castle was developed into a Renaissance palace in the 17th century; after its destruction, a new Baroque residence was built in the 18th century. Charles V had the Old Bridge built in 1546. It is one of Saarbrücken’s oldest structures and connects Alt-Saarbrücken with St. Johann.

Another striking example is the ensemble completed in 1775, comprising Ludwigskirche, Ludwigsplatz, and the surrounding palaces and government officials’ houses. Since 2021, Ludwigskirche has also been a pilgrim station on the Way of St. James and part of the “Sternenweg” project. If you explore the city on foot, you can choose between two different routes: the Stengel Route follows the architectural traces of Baroque master builder Friedrich Joachim Stengel; the signposted Saarbrücken Circuit leads to notable sights in Saarbrücken.

The Old Bridge also connects history with a seasonal excursion on the water: a landing stage for Saarbrücken passenger boats is located right beside it. These boats offer cruises on the Saar during the summer months. If such a trip is part of your plans, check the current timetable in advance.

Forests, walks and active days

The Urwald forest on the city’s doorstep is a forest conservation area covering more than 1,000 hectares. You can explore it on a guided hike with the forest ranger; such hikes are available year-round on request. The Urwald can also be reached by Saarbahn. For walks and longer tours, the Ruhbachtal recreation area and the Brennender Berg in Sulzbach, which is used for walks and hikes, are also good options.

In Sulzbach/Saar, the Salzbrunnen ensemble in the town centre recalls the former salt works after which the town was named. A visit here therefore offers a tangible trace of the town’s history. For cyclists, the Velo-visavis routes lead into the Saarland-Lorraine border region; check the route conditions before setting out. One of the most scenic sections of the Saarland Cycle Route passes through the Warndt.

Experiences for different kinds of trips

At the Franco-German Garden, the attractions include a large pond, waterfowl, numerous tree species, pedal boats and a water playground for children. If you are planning a trip with children, you can include the water playground as a specific activity to enjoy together. Other options include Saarbrücken’s architecture, the tour through the Völklingen Ironworks, or walks and hikes in the Ruhbachtal and at the Brennender Berg.

If you would like to discover more places in the Saarbrücken Regional Association, you can also include Kleinblittersdorf and Püttlingen in your travel plans.
