Schlaitz is set in heathland and surrounded by pine and mixed forests. The village’s attractions include the wooden sculpture trail and the Old Forge. Nature-related highlights around HAUS AM SEE and the “Tiefkippe Schlaitz” nature reserve add to the appeal. This gives you several options when planning your trip: landscapes and trails, village attractions or wildlife watching. The surrounding area also offers activities on lakes, as well as hiking trails and year-round cultural and nature experiences.

Attractions in the Village

The wooden sculpture trail is one of Schlaitz’s attractions. Each year, chainsaw artists add new designs to it. The Old Forge is another particularly worthwhile destination in the village. St Mary’s Church in Schlaitz also features a distinctive architectural detail: it stands in the village centre, opposite the Peace Oak, and has a curved, slate-covered roof turret. The wood art, forge and church each offer a different perspective on the village’s character.

Trails and Natural Areas

The “Muldestausee Post-Mining Landscape” nature trail is 17 km long. Schlaitz’s signposted cycling and hiking trails are different: they extend for many kilometres into the Dübener Heide. This gives you two different scales to choose from when planning your route: a single trail with a specified length or trails leading into the heath. To the west of Schlaitz, the “Tiefkippe Schlaitz” nature reserve, with an approximately 15 m-high stable slope, borders directly on undisturbed terrain.

HAUS AM SEE and Wildlife Watching

The permanent exhibition at HAUS AM SEE features more than 80 taxidermied animals. Observations are transmitted live to a large screen at HAUS AM SEE. HAUS AM SEE also offers excursions along the nature trail. From April to August, excursions into the “Tiefkippe Schlaitz” nature reserve include opportunities to observe the habitat of ospreys; new designs are added to the wooden sculpture trail every year. This brings together a seasonal wildlife-watching opportunity and an attraction that is updated annually. Free parking is available right next to HAUS AM SEE.
