Königstein/Saxon Switzerland – Fortress, Town History and Elbe Cycle Route
Accommodation in Königstein
In Königstein/Saxon Switzerland, fortress architecture, local history and routes through Saxon Switzerland come together. Königstein Fortress rises 247 metres above the Elbe in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region. Exhibitions, a footpath leading uphill and the Elbe Cycle Route give your stay different focuses: you can make historic architecture the centrepiece or combine your visit with hiking and cycling.
Königstein Fortress: Architecture and History
The fortress grounds comprise more than 50 buildings and landscaped green spaces. The fortress showcases 400 years of fortress architecture; the IN LAPIDE REGIS exhibition presents 800 years of Königstein’s history. It uses three-dimensional displays, lifelike figure installations and media stations. Interactive stations let children experience history through play. Step-free access to the fortress is available by lift.
Choosing a Route Between the Fortress and the Long-Distance Hiking Trail
Signposted forest paths lead from Königstein to the fortress; the walk takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The blue-marked route follows the Malerweg and has numerous steps. The red route follows the Alte Festungsstraße/Malerweg and is considered more comfortable. If you are travelling with children, you can take these differences into account when choosing your route. The Malerweg is a long-distance hiking trail in Saxon Switzerland that covers eight stages and connects nature and culture. The 30-to-45-minute walking time refers to the route to the fortress, not to the Malerweg as a whole. In the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, the Malerweg is exclusively a hiking trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike.
National Park and Cycling
The Saxon Switzerland National Park is also located in the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge. It is Saxony’s only national park and Germany’s only rocky national park; its rugged landscape offers nature experiences away from road noise. Cycling tours on the Elbe Cycle Route pass Königstein Fortress. In the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, the Elbe Cycle Route runs for 40 kilometres through Saxon Switzerland.
The Königstein bicycle garage is close to the Elbe Cycle Route, the ferry and the railway station. Bicycles and luggage can be stored there securely while you visit the town and the fortress. E-bikes can be charged in eight lower-level lockers. The two routes therefore also differ according to your planned mode of transport: the Malerweg is reserved for hiking, while cycling tours on the Elbe Cycle Route pass the fortress.
Town History Beside the Fortress
The Evangelical Lutheran town church of St. Mary in Königstein has a Baroque exterior and a Neoclassical interior. The present church building was reconsecrated in 1823 after the town fire of 1810 destroyed the church. A post-distance column in Königstein is connected with the development of the postal service under Augustus the Strong. Alongside the history of the fortress, religious architecture and postal history are further themes to explore in the town.
