Zwönitz brings together church architecture, industrial history and Ore Mountains traditions. Between the Church of the Holy Trinity, the paper mill, town walks and seasonal events, there are various themes around which you can plan your stay. The town’s history comes particularly vividly to life where buildings, collections and guided tours offer different insights.

Church, Town Hall and Historic Traces

The Church of the Holy Trinity was first mentioned in 1320 and rebuilt in its present form between 1688 and 1692. Inside, the Baroque pulpit altar and an Eule organ are among its distinctive features. The church is also the starting point for the tower keeper’s tour, which takes in not only the bell tower but also the Pfeiferstuhl (whistlers’ gallery).

The Fronveste was Zwönitz’s medieval prison and was inaugurated in 2009 as the night watchmen’s headquarters. In the Town Hall, a mechanical figure display depicts a farmer’s wife, a miner, a monk and a shoemaker’s boy; check when the display can be seen before your visit. St. Blaise’s Church adds to this historical picture as an old wayside chapel on the former Salt Road. A winged altar with four figures has been preserved there.

Town Walks and Views

The guided Zwönitz Night Watchman Tour leads through the lanes, past buildings and monuments of historical significance. The walk includes the Fronveste and the chance to look out over the rooftops of the town from the Town Hall tower. Advance booking is required. The tower keeper’s tour offers a different perspective: it starts at the Church of the Holy Trinity and includes access to the bell tower and a view from the Pfeiferstuhl. Check availability and booking arrangements before your trip.

Paper History and Mining Traditions

The history of the Niederzwönitz Paper Mill stretches from its first mention in 1568 to its conversion into a cardboard factory around 1868. The Technical Museum at Niederzwönitz Paper Mill offers a smartphone-based multimedia tour and accessible entry using virtual reality headsets. Guided tours and workshops on paper and cardboard making are available by prior request. Visitor arrangements may change, so check the current details before your visit.

The Zwönitz Mining History Route adds another historical focus. It follows the mining remains of the historic mining town. In Zwönitz, the history of papermaking and the traces of mining thus stand alongside each other as distinct themes, so you need not limit your stay to just one historical perspective.

Art, Collections and Seasonal Traditions

In Austel Park, the “Color Floating” light installation by the Purple Path is located above Austel Pond. Its illuminated elements are visible from dusk until midnight; during the cold season, the artwork is put into storage. The Bruno Gebhardt Collection in Austel Villa presents coins, weapons, art and crafts. Opening hours vary by season, so check the current dates before your visit.

The Zwönitz Hutzentage festival features an evening miners’ parade with more than 500 participants in costume. As this is a recurring seasonal event, check the current dates and programme. Zwönitz’s Candlemas celebrations traditionally include mulled wine, bratwurst and millet porridge as the Candlemas meal; here too, it is advisable to check dates and venues before your trip.

On 16 August 2026, the Knochenstampfe Local History Museum was closed for extensive renovation work. Before visiting, check whether its status has changed. If you are looking for accommodation in Zwönitz, you can decide on your focus in advance: perhaps guided town tours, paper history, mining traditions or seasonal customs. This gives your search a clear direction without requiring you to settle on just one way of experiencing the town.
