Kamenz combines a distinctive urban history with sacred art, hands-on science experiences and green trails. You can explore historical exhibitions and buildings, or enjoy views of Kamenz from the Lessing Tower and combine them with a walk on Hutberg. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests – with a focus on culture, time in nature, or a mix of both.

Urban History and Sacred Art

The Malzhaus is the oldest secular building in the town of Kamenz. Its permanent collection and special exhibitions focus on local history. The presentation of the town’s history traces Kamenz’s development along the Via Regia and its role in the League of Six Cities. The focus is therefore not only on the building, but also on the town’s historical development as explored in the exhibitions.

The St. Anne Museum of Sacred Art serves both as a museum and a church. It features five late Gothic carved altars and works of art from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Other exhibits relate to Franciscan history, religious devotion and the Reformation. As a stop on the Via Sacra, St. Anne adds these sacred themes to the cultural and historical perspective.

The Red Tower also tells the story of the town’s former fortifications: the 32-metre-high former defensive and watchtower is a remnant of the Pulsnitz Gate. Its architectural details include 117 steps. The Kamenz Forest Festival offers a different cultural highlight and is listed in Germany’s national inventory of intangible cultural heritage.

Explore, Walk and Pause

The Elementarium is housed in the historic Ponickau House in the centre of Kamenz. The same building also contains a library and a café. Its science experiences include an earthquake simulator, a geology activity area, archaeological finds and special exhibitions. This brings together natural sciences, geology and archaeology in a variety of ways.

To explore the town independently, you can use the Smartguide app for a self-guided city tour. If you would rather spend some time in nature, Hutberg has walking trails, and the Lessing Tower offers views over Kamenz. The two options offer different experiences: independent exploration of the town on the one hand, and exercise and views in green surroundings on the other.

A guided boat trip on the Großteich Deutschbaselitz is available seasonally. Advance booking is required. If you would like to include this trip in your plans, bear in mind that it is seasonal and must be booked in advance.
