Landscape between water and forest
Schönfeld offers a setting for walking and cycling tours through gently rolling terrain with lakes and other bodies of water. Extensive forests and nature reserves border the municipality. If you are planning a specific tour, check routes and accessibility locally.
The Linzer Wasser rises in the Linz area, near the northeastern slope of Galgenberg. On its way toward Kraußnitz, it feeds the Wüstenteich and Finkenteich ponds. Near Finkenmühle is a wetland designated as a protected landscape feature, with rare plants and grasses. Schloss Schönfeld Park offers a different natural highlight: rare tree species grow there, and it is also home to Saxony’s largest stand of ostrich ferns.
Schloss Schönfeld and its history
Guided tours take visitors through the historic rooms of Schloss Schönfeld. They cover the building’s history, its former residents and its development into a Neo-Renaissance castle. Guided tours are offered on an ongoing basis, but seasonal dates may change. Check the current tour schedule before your visit.
The castle also provides a historic setting for weddings and private and business events. These include anniversaries, company celebrations, conferences and receptions. Dates and booking packages may change.
Historic traces along roads and routes
Former Saxon-Prussian boundary stones can be found around Böhla and Kraußnitz. A late-medieval sandstone atonement cross also stands on the road to Kraußnitz. The former medieval VIA REGIA, also known as the High Road, ran through Schönfeld and is now a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe. While the boundary stones and atonement cross mark individual traces of history, the VIA REGIA places Schönfeld within the history of a larger route.
