Crimmitschau brings together an art-historical perspective on the town, its textile heritage and its green spaces. A 3-kilometre town walk takes you to 15 buildings and places of architectural and historical importance. Sahnpark, Sahnbad and the trails through Frankenhausen offer other highlights. You can shape your trip around architectural history, industrial history, nature observation and exercise.

Town history on a walking tour

The art-historical town walk begins and ends at Crimmitschau station. Stops include St. Laurentius Church, the Wettin Fountain, the villa district on Lindenstraße and the former Schocken department store. The route brings together a variety of architectural and urban settings in one tour. At 3 kilometres long, with 15 stops, it offers a practical way to discover Crimmitschau’s architecture and town history on foot.

Textile history at the cloth factory

The Gebr. Pfau Historic Cloth Factory is a technical monument of European significance and is now used as a museum. Guided tours take you through the woollen cloth production process step by step and explain how textile workers lived and worked in the past. The former factory complex has been protected since 1990 as a testament to industrial architecture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The cloth factory retains historic facilities for spinning, weaving, washing, dyeing and drying, with largely original machinery. Combined with the guided tours, these offer an engaging introduction to the different stages of work: the machines and rooms show the technical side of textile history, while stories about working and living conditions bring the everyday lives of the workforce into focus.

Park trails, nature and water

Sahnpark is Crimmitschau’s largest and oldest park. Its network of paths extends for 6.5 kilometres and is suitable for walking, jogging and fitness walking. A nature trail adds information about local wildlife and plant life. This lets you decide how much to focus on exercise or observing nature without having to go somewhere else.

Sahnbad is a regional outdoor swimming pool in a wooded setting, with a 50-by-100-metre swimming area and a children’s pool. The animal enclosure also offers a range of things to do, including an adventure playground, a nature trail and a green classroom for school and kindergarten children. The combination of nature topics and play facilities gives families specific places to visit that are different from a town walk or museum visit.

Frankenhausen: history and landscape

In Frankenhausen, a district of Crimmitschau, historical and landscape features come together. The ruins of the Cistercian convent date from 1292; the associated complex is a listed monument. The village centre also includes the 2.8-hectare Hofteich pond. The PleiĂźenaue shapes the landscape around Frankenhausen and offers another perspective on the area alongside the convent ruins.

Trails also help you find your way around: the Luther Trail reaches Crimmitschau via historic village centres, forests, parks and several lakes. The Luther Trail and the Way of St. James meet in Frankenhausen. If you enjoy walking, you can consider these two routes alongside the shorter town walk and the trails in Sahnpark. They offer different scales and ways to explore the surrounding area.

Crimmitschau and the district of Zwickau

As a broader landscape setting, the district of Zwickau lies between the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde and the foothills of the Ore Mountains. The district has around 700 kilometres of marked hiking trails, as well as many rest areas and places to stop for refreshments. This overview at district level complements the specific examples in Crimmitschau: the town walk, the trails in Sahnpark and the routes in Frankenhausen.

Accommodation and route planning

When choosing accommodation, it helps to weigh up what matters most during your stay: will you focus on the art-historical walk and textile history, or would you like to spend more time on park trails, swimming and the landscape around Frankenhausen? Compare your plans for each day with the location you want for your accommodation. This way, you can focus your search on the places that matter to you during your stay.

Crimmitschau is served by S-Bahn lines S5 and S5X, as well as bus routes 119, 159 and 160. As public transport routes can change, check current connections before you travel.
