Discover Kleinhennersdorf: Caves, high trails and culture
Accommodation in Kleinhennersdorf
Kleinhennersdorf lies on a plateau above the Elbe Valley. Its elevation ranges from 170 to 270 metres; from there, sweeping views open up across the mountain landscape of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland. The village combines these vistas with caves at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, a cycling tour through Papstdorf and Kleinhennersdorf, and a local cultural programme. When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: should Kleinhennersdorfer Stein and its caves take centre stage, or are you more interested in cycling, observing nature and the performing arts?
Caves at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein
Lichterhöhle is the largest cave at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein. It is 20 metres long and 15 metres wide. Its history is also linked to the sandstone: Lichterhöhle was used for sandstone quarrying. Sand-Hampel-Höhle is named after Friedrich Herrmann Hempel from Königstein, who began quarrying sand there. Both caves thus tell the story of the former use of the sandstone, while their different names and dimensions offer specific points of reference for exploring Kleinhennersdorfer Stein.
The caves are reached via a small path with sandy sections and a few steps. Due to significant erosion damage, you should stay on the paths. This is also useful when planning your tour: along with the cave destination, take account of the condition of the access path and the recommendation not to venture off the paths.
Hiking or cycling
The “Tour for Little Cave Explorers” is 4.48 kilometres long and rated moderate. It initially follows a red-marked path towards Kleinhennersdorf, then branches off to the caves at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein. The 2026 programme of guides certified by the national park also includes the guided hike “On the Way to Scheuersand”: it involves easy, safe climbing and exploring rock caves with flashlights. Booking is required for this guided hike.
Stage 7 of the Forststeig offers another perspective. It passes over Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, where you can discover various caves along the stage. The specific 4.48-kilometre distance, however, applies to the “Tour for Little Cave Explorers”. If you are comparing hiking options, these are two different ways to plan: a tour with a stated distance and difficulty, and a Forststeig stage with caves along the way.
Cycling offers a different way to experience the surrounding area. The municipal Kohlbornstein Tour is 15 kilometres long, passes through Papstdorf and Kleinhennersdorf, and returns to Kurort Gohrisch. Due to the topography of the eroded mountain landscape, parts of the route can be challenging. The cycling tour is therefore a separate option from the paths to Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, with a clearly stated distance and a route through several named places.
Nature and culture
At the Kleinhennersdorf wildlife enclosure, you can observe fallow deer in a natural setting. The enclosure is right next to a hiking trail; children can enjoy a small wooden train as a simple play activity. Check access information before visiting. This lets you include wildlife watching in your plans without conflating it with the cave paths or cycling tour.
Since 2023, Heymannbaude has been a rural community space and centre for the performing arts in Kleinhennersdorf. Its year-round programme includes performing arts classes, workshops, events and small festivals; individual offerings may change. The half-timbered Liethenmühle building adds a specific inscription to this cultural and historical perspective: it reads “Liethenmühle, built 1572”.
Choose what to focus on during your stay
If you would like to focus on caves and hiking trails, you can search specifically for accommodation in Kleinhennersdorf. For a cycling-focused trip, the Kohlbornstein Tour offers a different option, with a stated distance of 15 kilometres. Nature watching and the Heymannbaude programme offer further distinct attractions. Which of these interests matters most to you can help you decide whether Kleinhennersdorf is a suitable place to stay. Check booking requirements for guided tours and access information before visiting the wildlife enclosure.
