Neustadt in Sachsen lies between Dresden, Saxon Switzerland National Park and the Upper Lusatian Highlands. At the historic market square, the town’s history comes together in the town hall, the post-distance column and a fountain; the Neustädter Tal valley adds a scenic touch. You can choose from different themes when planning your trip: historic buildings, nature and outdoor activities.

Valley Landscape and Green Spaces

The Neustädter Tal valley lies 300 to 585 metres above sea level and is bordered by the Hohwald and Ungerberg ridges. This location gives the surrounding area a distinct topographic character alongside the town’s historic features. Green spaces are also part of the town itself: Arthur-Richter-Park offers a central walking route among rare trees, a pond, a fountain and waterfowl. A visit can therefore combine different impressions, from the history around the market square to nature in the park.

Town History in the Market Square and Historic Buildings

Neustadt was first mentioned in 1333 as a gold-mining town founded by miners from Freiberg. The town hall in the historic market square area is around 300 years old. A post-distance column dating from 1729 stands nearby. A bronze fountain commemorates the livestock markets held in the square for centuries. Together, these details illustrate different aspects of the town’s history: gold mining, historic route markers and livestock trading.

The Protestant St. Jacobi Church preserves a fully intact late Gothic choir dating from the 15th century. The historic rectory, Neustadt’s oldest building, stands near the church. It was the workplace of pastor and local historian Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger. The church and rectory combine preserved historic fabric with the memory of Götzinger’s work as a pastor and local historian.

At Langburkersdorf Castle, visitors can admire restored, painted ceiling elements from the 17th century. An event space in the castle is used for events, concerts and cultural highlights. The Langburkersdorf Hofmühle is a former watermill that has been opened to the public as a historic building. The former servants’ house in the Polenz district is also used for events; the events programme may change.

A guided walking tour of the town centre introduces Neustadt’s history, anecdotes and local stories. The free tour lasts around 1.5 hours and starts in front of the town hall at Markt 1. If you plan to join, check availability and dates before your trip.

Seasons, Trails and Water

The blooming snowflake meadows in the Polenz district are a seasonal highlight; flowering times vary from year to year. Walks through the valley are especially appealing in spring. Neustadt also has more than 160 kilometres of developed, signposted cycling routes. Local walking and cycling routes lead directly to Freibadesee lake and Waldbad Polenz outdoor pool; parking is available nearby. Another leisure option is Mariba Freizeitwelt, which offers a wave pool, a giant waterslide, whirlpools, water features, and wellness and sauna areas.

Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Interests

The town hall, market square, St. Jacobi and Langburkersdorf Castle showcase the area’s history, while the park, spring blossoms, cycling routes and the water attractions mentioned above offer other possible activities.
