Discover Geising: mountain nature and local history
Accommodation in Geising
Discover Geising through its striking contrasts: At the entrance to the town, a Baroque post-mile column recalls its transport history, while basalt columns on Geisingberg tell of its volcanic origins. There is also protected nature, traces of former mining and activities for active hours. You can tailor your stay to different interests—from local history and landscapes to water sports and winter sports.
History and art in Geising
The post-mile column you see today is a copy made in 1987 of the original erected in 1734. Geising Church also brings together different historical periods: it was rebuilt in 1689 as a simple Baroque hall church with three tiers of galleries. Inside stands a Gothic winged altar from the previous church, dated to around 1530. The church building and altar therefore belong to different centuries.
Other traces offer different glimpses into local history. In the Erdbach valley, the entrance to the Silber-Stollen has been preserved as a reminder of former mining. Beside the house at Altenberger Straße 4 stands a stone cross recovered from a stream. A knife or curved sword engraved on it suggests that the cross was erected as atonement for an act of violence. The interpretation of this detail remains explicitly cautious—a fitting contrast with the clearly dated buildings and works of art.
Geisingberg: nature and trails
At the former quarry, massive basalt columns reveal Geisingberg’s volcanic origins. The Geisingberg nature reserve is also notable for its exceptional biological diversity in a small area. Those exploring the Geisingberg area will therefore find both striking geological formations and an unusual variety of living things.
A few details can help with planning: The Geisingberg area can be reached from Geising station or Hartmannmühle; a steep climb leads up from the valley. The circular hiking trail around Geising is 10.53 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Geising railway bridge. It follows a historic nature trail and passes over Löwenhainer Höhe, the Anton-Günther monument, Kohlhaukuppe, the Aschergraben and the historic Geising bobsleigh track. There are panoramic views along the way.
The Erzgebirge-Vogtland Ridgeway also provides another link to the region: Geising station and Geisingberg are among its key stops. If you are weighing up different hiking options, you can consider the well-defined Geising circuit and the Ridgeway stops mentioned here as different starting points.
Water, wildlife park and winter sports
The Hüttenteich natural swimming lake has a swimming area, a non-swimmer area and a wave water slide. There are also sunbathing lawns, sports facilities and a children’s playground. If you would like to switch between activity and more relaxed breaks, the same site also has an 18-hole mini-golf course, electric mini-boats and rowing boats. The range of activities makes Hüttenteich a versatile destination for spending time by the water.
The Osterzgebirge Wildlife Park is located on the grounds of HartmannmĂĽhle between Lauenstein and Geising. In natural surroundings, visitors can see fallow deer, red deer and mouflon, as well as lynxes and wildcats. The park also has a large playground with a climbing castle. For a different kind of active outing, the GrĂĽndelstadion in Geising offers ice skating and ice hockey.
Which place to stay suits your plans?
If you are also planning to visit the wildlife park, take its location on the grounds of HartmannmĂĽhle between Lauenstein and Geising into account when finding your way around. This lets you look for places to stay based on the destinations that matter to you, rather than treating every experience as the same kind of excursion. For a hiking day, the stated length and start and end points of the Geising circuit, as well as the steep climb described above, offer different practical points of reference.
