Wesselburener Deichhausen is characterized by its rural setting and proximity to nature. Vast fields of cabbage, grain and rapeseed shape the landscape; the North Sea is about six kilometers away. The area also has a settlement history that can be read in its wurts. This combination can provide a starting point when choosing accommodation: Would you mainly like to learn about the area's rural character and history, or combine different cultural and natural topics in Dithmarschen?

Wurts tell the story of early settlements

The Hassenbüttel archaeological settlement wurt is located on Ringweg in Wesselburener Deichhausen. A large village wurt was established there in the 10th and 11th centuries. Finds point to long-distance trade with Scandinavia, the Rhineland and the coastal Netherlands—so the area's history extends in the imagination far beyond the immediate landscape. The settlement wurt on which Wesselburener Deichhausen stands dates back to the Middle Ages. Excavations at the associated wurts in Hassenbüttel show construction phases in the 9th or 10th century and extensions in the 10th or 11th century. These different dates describe several phases of development and give the wurt history its depth over time.

Culture and archaeology in Dithmarschen

Elsewhere in Dithmarschen, other places offer their own cultural and natural highlights. The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen: from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. For a broader overview of the region's museums, there are 19 museums, run by both paid staff and volunteers, in eleven locations.

Hands-on activities are at the heart of the Dithmarschen Stone Age Park: offerings include flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewelry, making fires and baking bread. The program may vary; check current dates before visiting. Next to the Stone Age Park is the Stone Age Forest in Albersdorf. Its natural outdoor grounds cover around 40 hectares and are open year-round free of charge; there are nine original archaeological monuments there. If you are planning a visit, check access in advance.

Wadden Sea, coast and trails

Nature can also be explored in different ways across Dithmarschen. Guided mudflat walks along the Dithmarschen coast are led by knowledgeable National Park mudflat guides. At low tide, they reveal the diverse life of the Wadden Sea; guided tour dates vary. In Friedrichskoog, the National Park Station is an information center with a National Park exhibition on the south side of the harbor. Other attractions there include a seal rescue station and the Wadden Sea Conservation Station. From Friedrichskoog, the Conservation Station manages the National Park in southern Dithmarschen, along 30 kilometers of coastline between Meldorfer Koog and the Elbe estuary.

Hikers can compare routes of different lengths and formats. The first stage of the North–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometers long; the full long-distance trail comprises five stages and leads from Meldorf to Kiel. Another option is the “Mötjensee and White-Tailed Eagle” route near Lunden: an easy, 12.79-kilometer loop for flatland hiking. The length and route format can help you plan a hike to suit your preferred distance, without treating the routes as equivalent.

Regional events and finding the right accommodation

At the KOHLosseum's Krautwerkstatt, demonstrations followed by tastings take place Tuesday through Thursday at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. From November 1 until Easter, only the 2 p.m. demonstration takes place; check the schedule before your visit. During the Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, the region hosts farmers' markets, town festivals, and sporting and cultural events. Dates and individual program items may change.

If you are bringing together different interests for a trip with others, choosing by theme can help: wurt history and museums offer a different focus than hands-on Stone Age activities, mudflat walks or hiking trails. First decide which places and topics you want to shape your stay. Then match your accommodation search to the specific destinations in your plans, and check the location in relation to the places you have chosen.
