With its bathing beach right on the North Sea, Nordermeldorf has a clear coastal focus. There are also guided mudflat walks and Juliane Mill, a cultural highlight in the village. Swimming, nature and cycling offer different options for planning a trip—from spending time at the beach to following a waymarked circular route.

North Sea bathing beach

Nordermeldorf bathing beach is about 600 metres long. The site includes an adventure playground with play equipment, large lawns and wooded areas. There is also a large sunbathing lawn on the sea dike slope. So the beach offers more than just the designated bathing area: there are also spaces for playing and relaxing.

The water slopes gently in the designated bathing area, where DLRG lifeguards supervise swimming. Showers and steps over the rock armour provide access to the water and mudflats. A kiosk and restroom facilities round out the beach amenities. Ample parking is available behind the dike. A 200-metre stretch in the northern part of the beach is designated for guests with dogs.

Mudflat walks and natural landscape

Most guided mudflat walks run by the WattfĂĽhrergemeinschaft (mudflat guide association) start at Nordermeldorf bathing beach. The Wattwurm Information Centre is also a starting point for guided walks. Specialist organisations also offer guided routes through the Speicherkoog and the North Sea Wadden Sea landscape.

After the dike was built in 1979, North Sea mudflats in the Speicherkoog developed into a distinctive natural landscape. The area is considered an internationally important stopover site for birds and a nationally important breeding area. At times, more than 10,000 birds of a single species can land on the open grassland and mudflats of the Speicherkoog.

Cycle to Juliane Mill

The Mill Route is a waymarked, 39.91-kilometre circular tour focused on mills. It is rated moderate and leads through meadows and fields to Juliane Mill in Nordermeldorf. Before setting out, it is worth checking the latest route details, as these may change.

Juliane is a gallery Dutch windmill and is listed as HISTOUR point M53. It is used for cultural events as part of the Kultur.Wind.MĂĽhle programme. A ride on the Mill Route therefore combines cycling with a designated cultural venue in Nordermeldorf; its character is quite different from a stay at the bathing beach.

More things to discover in Dithmarschen

Dithmarschen also offers cultural and historical topics to explore when planning a trip. The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf traces 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. At the Stone Age Park Dithmarschen, hands-on activities include flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, fire-making and bread-baking. Activities may vary depending on the programme.

Along the Dithmarschen coast, knowledgeable National Park mudflat guides lead guided walks across the mudflats. At low tide, the tours reveal the Wadden Sea’s diverse wildlife. Tides and available tour dates vary, so check the schedule in advance. This helps distinguish Nordermeldorf’s beach and mudflat walks from other cultural and natural attractions specifically associated with Dithmarschen.
