Despite ongoing development and modern infrastructure, Windbergen has retained its original village character. At the same time, pilgrimage history, traces of ancient settlement and paths through the open fields shape the picture of the village. If you are looking for accommodation in Windbergen, you can combine your stay with an interest in local history—or plan time for walks and bike rides.

Pilgrimage history and the Church of the Holy Cross

Windbergen is the pilgrimage centre of the Dithmarschen Way of St James and is home to an ecumenical pilgrimage church. The village was already a pilgrimage destination in the late Middle Ages. The Romanesque corpus of Christ was found here in 1495. This history gives the church village a distinctive historical connection, different from the prehistoric traces in the landscape.

The architectural history of the Church of the Holy Cross also tells a story of change: the former church was demolished in 1742 and rebuilt larger on the same site. The village’s history is therefore shaped by both its long pilgrimage tradition and a specific turning point in the construction of the church.

On foot, by bike or on horseback

There are paths for walking, cycling and horse riding in the fields around Windbergen. Most circular walking routes are signposted. They start and end at the information board by the bus stop, which serves as a shared orientation point for the routes. When planning your day, you can therefore choose between different activities without all the routes serving the same purpose.

The Franziskusweg is 6.9 kilometres long and leads through a peaceful wooded area with old trees in the Windberger Heese. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting off. The open fields are also an option for cycling. If you would rather explore on foot, the signposted circular routes offer another way to discover the area.

From the former lake to Wodansberg

The circular routes extend from the former Lake Windbergen, which lay two metres below sea level, to Wodansberg. From there, you can look out over a low-lying landscape below. The two names mark distinct points of reference for orientation and give the landscape description a range that stretches from the former lake to Wodansberg.

The history of settlement is also connected with this landscape. Neolithic finds point to settlement around Wodansberg some 4,000 years ago. Bronze Age burial mounds attest to early settlement in the Windbergen area. Those exploring the paths can consider the landscape and the long history of the village as two distinct aspects of their visit.

A local tale from 1500

The Windbergen wedding is a local tale set in the days before the Battle of Hemmingstedt in February 1500. Detlef von Liliencron wrote a poem about it. Unlike the finds and burial mounds, the wedding belongs to the village’s oral storytelling tradition. It offers a literary perspective on another chapter in Windbergen’s history, alongside its pilgrimage history and church architecture.
