Krumstedt: Moorland, Trails and History
Accommodation in Krumstedt
Krumstedt combines a distinctive geest landscape with a long local history: the village lies on a geest peninsula and is surrounded by two stream valleys and extensive moorland and lowland areas. The landscape, historical traces, outdoor activities and a seasonal Advent tradition offer a range of starting points for planning a trip. Krumstedt is also considered a central base for exploring attractions in Dithmarschen. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore weigh up the village’s own themes alongside other destinations within the wider travel region.
Traces from Different Eras
Stone Age finds point to a very long history of settlement. Krumstedt was first mentioned in writing in 1208, in a papal document. The Ox Road is also part of the village’s history: the trade route between Dithmarschen and Holstein passed through Krumstedt in the 16th and 17th centuries. Krumstedt’s local history also covers the Hare War, a conflict between the people of Dithmarschen and Holstein in 1288. These accounts range from early settlement to historical routes and conflicts.
Moorland Landscapes and the District Forest
Krumstedt raised bog lies in the district forest. The landscape raised bog is located between Krumstedt and Schafstedt in a spruce forest and covers around 23 hectares. It formed in a closed depression above an impermeable layer of soil. Put simply, a layer beneath the depression prevents water from seeping away. The bog has survived drainage, peat extraction and afforestation. This landscape therefore offers a chance to learn both about how it formed and how human use has changed it.
The district forest is popular with mushroom pickers. If you plan to gather mushrooms there, check the local regulations in force beforehand.
Explore on Foot, by Bike or on Horseback
Krumstedt offers plenty of opportunities for cycling, horse riding and hiking. Cafés are also part of the local offering and provide places to take a break. Radcafé Schnepel offers cyclists a place to rest and also welcomes motorists and walkers. An e-bike charging station is available; if you rely on it, check its availability in advance.
The Radcafé’s garden has a play area with a slide, swing and other play equipment. If you are travelling with children, this may be a helpful consideration when planning breaks. Check before your trip that the facilities are currently available.
Cakes, Lunch and a Farm Shop
Radcafé Schnepel serves homemade cakes and tortes, ice cream desserts and savoury lunch dishes. The selection may change. Hofladen Tumat stocks grilled meat, sausages, cold cuts and dishes from a field kitchen. The range also includes regional eggs and honey, homemade jam, herbs, and handmade items made from wool, clay and wood. If you are planning around a particular product, check the selection and any ordering requirements in advance, as the range and availability may change.
A Nativity Scene Trail During Advent
Every year during Advent, Krumstedt’s Nativity Trail, a walking route, is decorated with numerous nativity scenes. This tradition offers a seasonal reason to visit Krumstedt at this time of year. Specific dates and arrangements may vary; check them if you would like to make the trail a firm part of your travel plans.
