Discover Wrixum
Accommodation in Wrixum
Thatched Frisian houses, gardens and historic buildings give Wrixum its distinctive village character. There are also paths leading through the village or into the forest. Those considering accommodation in Wrixum can combine village history and local discoveries with proximity to Wyk.
Frisian houses and village history
The old village centre developed in the 15th century as a linear settlement along the marsh. Traditional Frisian houses, with their thatched roofs and distinctive gables above the entrance doors, are part of the village landscape. In northern Wrixum, historic buildings and a settlement pattern that developed along the boundary between the geest and the marsh have been preserved. Wrixum’s history is reflected both in the shape of the village and in individual buildings. The Bop, a footpath that winds through Wrixum, passes through the village and is a good way to explore it.
St. Nicolai Church dates back to around 1240. It stands right beside Wrixum’s mill, on the border with Boldixum, a district of Wyk. The mill is a windmill of the “Großer Erdholländer” type: it dates from 1851 and operated until 1960. It is one of five windmills on Föhr. The church and mill thus represent not only different architectural styles but also Wrixum’s connection to the island’s history.
Gardens, paths and discoveries
The apple orchard is a park beside Wrixum’s mill, with paths and a fountain. Young trees of old fruit varieties grow in the garden, while roses bloom from spring through late autumn. Wrixum’s colourful gardens also offer visitors places to relax. The gardens add a green accent to the village landscape, complementing its historic houses and buildings.
For a walk through the village, the Bop offers a different option from the Gruffalo Trail in Wrixum Forest: this is a forest walk approximately 1 km long. Opened in 2025, the trail offers puzzles and activities about the Gruffalo and his friends, providing a playful introduction to the local flora and fauna. It is designed for children aged 3 to 6. Puzzle cards are available at the starting point at the end of Lindenweg. As visitor information may be updated, it is worth checking the municipality’s latest notices before setting off.
There is also a large sports and play area for getting active, with swings, climbing equipment and space to play football. Together with the Bop and the Gruffalo Trail, it offers different ways to make your stay active: from a footpath through the village to a puzzle walk in the forest or time in the play area.
