Neumünster combines neoclassical architectural heritage, textile traditions, wildlife watching and nature experiences. This makes the city an interesting place to stay, where culture and outdoor activities go hand in hand: you can learn about the history of cloth-making, spend time at the wildlife park or explore the network of paths in Dosenmoor. Which of these aspects appeals to you most can also help you choose the right focus for your trip.

Architectural heritage, textile crafts and art

Vicelin Church is in the heart of Neumünster. It was designed by Christian Frederik Hansen, the Chief Building Director of Copenhagen, and built between 1829 and 1834 as a strictly neoclassical Protestant church. Its architecture offers a clear example of the neoclassical style. Another distinctive building is Caspar von Saldern House, considered Neumünster’s oldest historic monument.

At the Tuch + Technik Museum, the story of spinners, weavers and cloth-makers, and of the traditional craft, spans from its beginnings to the present day. The industrial side of textile production is represented by impressive historic machines: they process raw wool and spin yarn, and demonstrations take place at scheduled times. If you would like to see them in action, check the dates for your visit. The WachsFlecken candle workshop offers a different way to experience craftsmanship: visitors can see candle-making up close, including the dipping and pouring methods.

In Gerisch Park, the “Gerisch-Park” app combines a poetic, lyrical audio tour of the sculptures with a virtual tour you can take from home. The artworks in the park can also be explored through an audio guide, while the virtual option offers another way to experience them without visiting in person.

Wildlife and nature trails

Neumünster Wildlife Park is home to around 700 animals from 100 mammal, bird and reptile species across 24 hectares. Facilities for children include a large adventure playground. Paths run between the spacious animal enclosures and are suitable for wheelchairs. Wildlife watching and the playground offer different ways to spend your visit.

Dosenmoor has a network of maintained paths, viewing platforms and an informative educational trail. Most of it lies within Neumünster, while parts extend into neighboring districts. The paths, viewpoints and educational trail offer different ways to enjoy a visit, from exploring the landscape to taking in the views from the platforms. If you are planning a visit, check the current condition of the paths and platforms in advance.

City walks, cycling and getting here

Neumünster can be explored on foot or on a longer cycling loop. Free walking tours of the city center usually last two hours; tours are offered seasonally, so it is worth checking the dates for your visit. The North Cycling Loop starts and ends in Neumünster and is 47 kilometers long. Its route passes through Einfeld, Bordesholm, Bissee, Groß Buchwald, Negenharrie, Großharrie and Tasdorf. The two options offer distinct ways to plan your day: the usually two-hour city walk and the 47-kilometer cycling loop involve different amounts of time and activity.

Neumünster has four railway stations or stops on the Hamburg–Flensburg and Hamburg–Kiel lines. As train services can change, check the latest timetables before you travel. The combination of city culture, the wildlife park and moorland paths offers several reasons to choose Neumünster as a destination; the cycling loop adds a longer route through several of the places named above.

Schleswig-Holstein as a wider setting

Schleswig-Holstein as a whole lies between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Its coastal landscapes include sandy and grassy beaches, pebble beaches, steep coasts and the Wadden Sea. The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is globally significant as a resting area for migratory birds. In another of the state’s landscapes, Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, around 200 lakes of varying sizes can be explored on foot or by bike. These examples illustrate the diversity of Schleswig-Holstein’s landscapes, while Neumünster’s own attractions range from architectural history and crafts to the wildlife park and moor.
