At Husum Harbor, changing water levels meet a connection to the North Sea and a varied cultural offering. The North Sea reaches into the town; Husum is also linked to the National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea. The National Park House Husum is located right by the harbor. When planning a trip, you can focus on nature, harbor life and urban culture in different ways.

Experience the harbor, water and nature

At Husum Harbor, you can experience the surroundings at low or high tide. Boat excursions from Husum include trips to seal banks and shrimp-fishing excursions. The harbor is also part of the local culinary scene: shrimp rolls and Frisian cake are among the treats mentioned here. Water, excursion options and regional culinary experiences are therefore close together—though they do not have to make up the same part of your day.

For a longer outdoor route, a hiking trail of around eight kilometers leads from the National Park House at Husum Harbor to the landing stage in the SchobĂĽll district. It connects the harbor, meadows and birdlife with a view of the North Sea without a dike. Those looking mainly for brief impressions at the harbor can make a different choice from taking this longer route.

In spring, more than four million crocuses turn Husum Castle Park into a purple spectacle of nature. Beyond Husum, North Frisia also offers opportunities to experience nature: birdwatching is possible year-round along the North Frisian coast and in the adjacent inland area. This broader regional perspective complements the landscapes and birdlife encountered on the route to SchobĂĽll.

Museums, literature and local history

Ostenfeld Farmhouse is considered Germany’s oldest open-air museum. It presents rural everyday and working life through traditional interiors, tools and household objects. The farmhouse also has a garden with boxwood-edged beds, herbs, ornamental plants and old apple trees. The North Frisia Museum Nissenhaus focuses on cultural developments and traditions along the North Sea coast.

Literature enthusiasts can visit the Theodor Storm Center, which brings together an archive and museum in Storm’s last home in Husum. Several museums in Husum also explore whaling and fishing, shipbuilding and navigation, the sunken settlement of Rungholt, and Theodor Storm. These topics offer different points of focus: maritime history sits alongside landscape and literary history. St. Mary’s Church is considered one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most significant Neoclassical works. Husum Castle houses a museum with a gallery in the attic; information panels explain the stops along the Husum Cultural Trail.

Husum as a base

Connections to other destinations may also factor into your choice of location: DB Regio RB64 runs from Husum via Tönning to Sankt Peter-Ording. If you would like to use this route when planning your trip, check the current timetable. Guided city walks are offered in Husum year-round, including guided strolls and night watchman tours.

When choosing accommodation, you can first consider what you want your trip to revolve around: the harbor and changing water levels, museums and the Cultural Trail, or nature experiences from the castle park to the path to SchobĂĽll. These options can help you get a sense of Husum as a destination and find a suitable base for your own interests.
