Nottfeld: Moorland and Christianslyst
Accommodation in Nottfeld
Nottfeld is characterised by woodland, field margins, hedgerows, wetlands and small groves. Christianslyst lies amid this landscape, with a rich history and a range of options for active days. The moor, paths and location in Angeln give the area distinct facets: you can explore nature and culture while considering which focus best suits your trip.
Moorland and nature conservation
The Schukjer Moor is a distinctive landscape: half of the moor lies within Nottfeld. A 13-hectare remnant of raised bog is the focus of nature conservation efforts there, which also include restoring water levels. Together with the wetlands and groves, the moor shapes the area’s natural character. Field margins and hedgerows provide a different accent from the more densely wooded sections.
Christianslyst lies in the rolling landscape of Angeln between the Schlei and the Flensburg Fjord, about five kilometres from the Schlei. This location offers a glimpse of the area’s landscape diversity, although the moor and the fjord do not offer the same nature experience: in Nottfeld, the Schukjer Moor is a notable landmark, while Christianslyst places the Schlei and the Flensburg Fjord within the region’s wider landscape.
Christianslyst: history and group facilities
Christianslyst was once a royal hunting estate. The present-day building was constructed in 1969; most of the older buildings were replaced by the current complex between 1969 and 1970. This history also makes Christianslyst an interesting counterpoint to the moor and farmland: here, the estate’s past can be explored alongside its present-day use as group accommodation.
Christianslyst is primarily intended for larger groups and has 140 beds. It also has facilities for lessons, workshops and talks. This is a useful point of reference when planning a trip and looking for a stay with a shared programme. The outdoor grounds include sports areas for football, handball, volleyball, beach volleyball and pétanque. A heated swimming pool is an additional feature; it is open seasonally. Check the current opening times before visiting.
On foot, by bike or on the water
The area around Christianslyst is suitable for hiking and cycling. Bike hire can be arranged through the staff; Christianslyst also offers canoe hire for trips on the Schlei. This gives you a choice of different kinds of active pursuits, from routes through the surrounding area to a trip on the water.
The route sections described also link natural and cultural points of interest: the route leads to Norderbrarup and St. Mary’s Church, passing the ring-shaped Kummerhy burial mound. Its northern continuation passes the Thorsberger Moor. Near Nottfeld, the route leaves the track and runs through the wooded sections of Peters and Kuhholz.
Getting here and finding your way
The regional train from Flensburg to Kiel runs hourly and stops at Süderbrarup station. From there, bus routes 605 and 610 go to Nottfeld. Timetables and routes may change; check your connection before travelling. From the Christianslust–Nottfeld stop, a 500-metre walk leads to Christianslyst.
More to explore in the Schleswig-Flensburg destination
The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers its own nature and culture highlights. Schlei Nature Park encompasses gentle hills, forests, hedgerows, rapeseed and grain fields, as well as sandy beaches and bathing coves. Its brackish-water areas provide habitats for numerous endangered bird species. Haithabu and the Danewerk offer a cultural focus: both have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018, and more than 25 kilometres of the Danewerk rampart still remain today. These regional highlights add to the picture of Nottfeld without replacing its local landscape features.
