The stream of the same name runs through the district of Garbek, where the Landpartie 5 circular cycling route also begins and ends. Garbek belongs to the municipality of Wensin in the Segeberg district of Schleswig-Holstein; Wensin lies on the shore of Lake Warder. For planning your holiday, it is helpful to consider two scales: Garbek as a district with its own cycling route, and Wensin as a municipality by the lake. The hiking trails described each have their own route and character.

Cycling through the administrative district

Landpartie 5 is a circular cycling route that starts and ends in Garbek. It is one of five cycling routes developed by the Trave-Land administrative district to invite visitors and residents to explore the district’s landscape. Starting and finishing in the same place gives you a clear reference point for planning your day. Before setting off, check the route signs and trail conditions; these details may change.

Hiking: a connecting trail or a circular route

On foot, you can choose between a trail with a named destination and a circular route. The Sophienberg connecting trail passes through Garbek and Wensin and continues to Lake Warder. A regional hiking guide from 2024 lists its distance as 7.0 kilometres and the walking time as about two hours. The Redder circular route is 7.16 kilometres long and takes about one hour and 50 minutes to walk. The estimated times are similar. Your choice therefore depends mainly on the route and destination: the connecting trail leads to Lake Warder, while the Redder is a circular route.

The Redder circular route also includes a distinctive natural section: for about one kilometre, it follows a narrow path through one of the nature park’s most beautiful Redders. If you are travelling together, you can take this character of the route into account alongside the distance and time estimates when planning your day. The starting point is also important: there is no car park at the circular route itself. The nearest official car park is in the Garbek district of Wensin; from there, it is about a 20-minute walk to the hiking trail. Allow for this walk in your plans and check the latest trail details in advance.

Local history and historical sites

The history of the area is also reflected in specific local landmarks. Garbek is represented in the coat of arms of the municipality of Wensin by a windmill that no longer exists. The Wensin estate manor house is part of the municipality’s architectural heritage. It is one of the oldest manor houses in Schleswig-Holstein to have survived largely unchanged. However, the manor house is on private property and is not open to visitors. Gut Wensin golf course lies in the wider area around Garbek; a prehistoric burial mound is located on its grounds.
