Nobitz combines aviation history with village architecture and trails through the countryside. The Flugwelt Altenburg-Nobitz museum is a major highlight, while churches, half-timbered houses and distinctive details in the districts reveal further cultural facets. Cycle routes, the Way of St. James and outdoor discoveries round out the picture. When choosing accommodation for your stay, consider whether you mainly want to explore aviation and architectural history or spend more time outdoors.

Aviation history at Flugwelt

The Flugwelt Altenburg-Nobitz museum uses a wide range of exhibits to tell the story of the airfield and explore aviation topics. The collection includes, among other things, a MiG-21 SPS and a Breguet BR1150 “Atlantic”. An ex-naval aircraft is also accessible to visitors in the outdoor area; check the current access conditions before your visit.

Seasonal opening hours are important when planning your visit: from April to October, the museum is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the hours again before you travel.

Half-timbered houses and churches in the districts

Numerous distinctive half-timbered buildings shape the townscape of Nobitz and its districts. Gieba is home to a restored farmhouse considered the oldest farmhouse in the Altenburg region. The churches across the municipality each have their own distinctive interiors, histories and features. The area’s cultural character is therefore shaped not only by a major exhibition venue, but also by the distinct architectural and historical details found in its villages.

Some of these features are particularly specific: Mockern church contains a carved Madonna, Zürchau church has tracery windows dating from the time of its construction, and Maltis church has a round-arched portal and a sunburst door. The church tower clock in Saara has the words “Make use of time” on its dial instead of numerals. These examples show the variety of historic forms and details, which are not limited to a single church.

Cycle routes, pilgrimage trail and nature

The Pleiße Cycle Route passes through Nobitz, where it crosses the “Altenburg–Colditz” cycle tour. Another route is the sculpture trail, which follows the Sprotte through the municipality to the Selleris weir. The Way of St. James also passes through Nobitz on its route via Borna and Altenburg to Zwickau. Hiking and cycling are among the municipality’s leisure activities; before setting out, it is worth checking current route conditions and trail markers.

The Naturoase in Saara offers several topics to explore. Three large information boards cover the mill, the park’s avenue trees, the birdhouse, nesting boxes and hedges. Five small information boards focus on a millstone, a baking recipe, two puzzles and a specimen tree. There is also a wooden mill visitors can walk through, with a seating area for children.

The Märchensee is in the Leinawald forest. The Schömbach Reservoir is also close to the destination, directly beside the Leinawald; its dam wall is open to visitors and invites you to take a walk. This means scenic landscapes complement the cultural attractions and signposted routes. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which of these highlights you would like to shape your stay.
