Windischleuba: A walk and local history

Windischleuba can be discovered through two special features: a walk beneath the birch trees and a signposted trail through the village’s history. The cemetery in Windischleuba, with its birch avenues, is a rewarding destination for a walk.

The Historical Village Trail in Windischleuba leads to the Renaissance castle, the Old Forge, a former three-sided farmstead, St. Nicolaus Church, the escort and customs house, the cemetery, the Gasthof zum Mönch, a four-sided farmstead, and the Duke Ernst Monument. The trail was created together with local residents as part of “Der fliegende Salon – Kulturaustausch im Altenburger Land” (The Flying Salon – Cultural Exchange in the Altenburger Land). Its stops bring together buildings, crafts, farmsteads, and local places of remembrance to explore the village’s history.

The castle is also part of Windischleuba’s history as a place to stay: it has been home to a youth hostel with a musical focus since 1977.

Landscapes and trails in the Altenburger Land

The wider destination of the Altenburger Land is characterized by gentle hills, extensive forests, and idyllically situated bathing lakes. The Altenburg Botanical Experience Garden offers an area for recreation and relaxation. The region therefore offers both scenic landscapes and a garden as distinct options for outings.

There are various ways to get active: the modern Neuseen-Challenge long-distance hiking trail runs through the Altenburger Land and is marked with a bright neon-yellow shoe. The Pleiße Cycle Route also runs through the Altenburger Land. The Luther Trail passes through the region and can be walked as a pilgrimage route. These options each have a different focus—from long-distance hiking and cycling to pilgrimage.

Culture and collections in the region

The Rote Spitzen are the surviving Romanesque towers of a former Augustinian monastery and are recognized as a cultural monument of national significance. In Altenburg, the Residenzschloss stands on a porphyry rock; it houses the Palace and Playing Card Museum. The Playing Card Museum is one of the oldest and most extensive museums of its kind in Europe.

Art and natural history offer different points of interest, too. The Lindenau Museum owns 180 precious panels of early Italian painting dating from the 13th to the 16th century. The Mauritianum Natural History Museum displays a historic bird collection, fossils from lignite open-cast mines, and an interactive area devoted to local flora and fauna. Those interested in the region’s history will find cultural history exhibitions at Posterstein Castle Museum.

A visit to Posterstein Castle Museum includes the castle dungeon and a climb up the 25-meter-high keep. Check the availability of these offerings before your trip.

Regional stories and culinary delights

In Altenburg, the Schmecktouren combine a city tour with regional food and drink, as well as stories about the people and traditions of the region. Dates and booking conditions may change, so check them in advance. Since 2014, Brüderkirche has served as a pilgrimage and information center for the Luther Trail and the old imperial road Via Imperii—another cultural landmark in the Altenburger Land.
