Stockstadt am Rhein combines an extensive floodplain landscape with distinctive traces of local and industrial history. On Kühkopf, a nature reserve and historic sites come together; the Evangelical Church also stands out in the townscape. Whether you want to focus on trails through the floodplains or the history of Hofgut Guntershausen, Stockstadt offers a range of topics to consider as you plan your stay.

Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue: floodplain landscape on the Rhine island

The Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue floodplain conservation area covers almost 24 square kilometers and includes the Rhine island of Kühkopf and the floodplain complex of Knoblochsaue to the north. The Rhine island was designated a nature reserve in 1952. The area therefore has a clearly defined conservation history, and its two parts are also reflected in its name.

Around 60 kilometers of hiking trails are available for exploring the area; all of these trails are also suitable for cyclists. This offers two ways to experience the same natural landscape: on foot or by bike. If you are planning your time in the area, check current trail and route conditions in advance.

Church and industrial monument in the townscape

The Evangelical Church in Stockstadt dates from 1607. Its distinctive tower defines the townscape. The church also has a Dreymann organ from the 19th century with an Aeoline. According to the description, no other organ of its kind has this stop—a special detail of the church’s furnishings that is distinct from the history of the building itself.

A different period in local history is represented by the last surviving horse-head pump from the era of oil production. It stands at Stockstadt 38 well on Kühkopf and serves as an industrial monument commemorating this period of extraction. Together, the church and the pump show how varied the historical themes in Stockstadt are: a building from the early 17th century on the one hand, and a reminder of oil extraction on the other.

Local history museum on Kühkopf

The Stockstadt am Rhein Local History Museum is housed in the former administrator’s residence of Hofgut Guntershausen on Kühkopf. Its permanent exhibition covers the history of the estate, including the visit of Russian Tsar Nicholas II to Kühkopf in 1903. This makes a specific visit from local history part of the exhibition on the estate’s history.

Other sections focus on oil production in the Hessian Ried and basket weaving. A replica of a gold-washing bench illustrates how gold was once washed from the Rhine. A separate room covers the emergency landing of Count Zeppelin’s airship LZ 4 on the Rhine near Kühkopf, at Kornsand, in 1908. The exhibition thus brings together crafts and economic topics with a historical event that took place in the area around Kühkopf.

Two Herrensteine on the opposite banks of the Rhine also commemorate a story: they mark the occasion when Landgrave Ludwig VIII walked across the frozen Rhine with his entourage on March 10, 1740. The stones are still there today. While the Local History Museum’s exhibition brings together several topics relating to the estate and the region, the Herrensteine commemorate a single event and its legacy.

Nature and culture for planning your stay

The adventure playground at Rheintor is the largest playground in Stockstadt and is located right by the entrance to the Rhine island of Kühkopf. If particular play facilities are important to your plans, check the current amenities before your visit, as they may change.

When looking for accommodations, consider which aspect you would like to focus on during your stay: the trails and floodplain landscape, or the historical themes of the church, industrial monument and local history museum. This way, Stockstadt am Rhein need not be reduced to just one kind of excursion. Planning a route through the conservation area is one consideration; for a stay focused on cultural history, the museum and local history offer other points of interest.
