Discover Kelsterbach through its contrasting Main River landscape and city history. The Ice Age Kelsterbach Terrace, a quiet lake in the forest and the town museum’s collections offer different perspectives on the town. There are also stops along the Regionalpark Climate Route, which bring ecological connections to life. In summer, families can also enjoy a large water playground where children can have fun and cool off.

Main River Landscape and Nature Watching

The Kelsterbach Terrace is an Ice Age river terrace of the Main; its steep bank is up to 17 metres high. The scene changes at Staudenweiher: the lake is tranquil and surrounded by dense forest. From the viewing platform, you can take in the entire lake; it also offers excellent opportunities for observing nature and birds. Staudenweiher lies directly on the Regionalpark route for cyclists and walkers. It is a short walk from SĂĽdpark.

Stops along the Climate Route connect the landscape with learning. At the “Riverine Forests” stop, a model set into the ground simulates a flood event. You can observe how water behaves in a landscape with and without floodplain forest. The “Flora Fauna” stop focuses on climate change: it shows how climate change affects animals and plants along the Main and changes ecological relationships. Alongside enjoying nature, you can explore questions about water, habitats and species.

Town History at the Museum and in the Unterdorf

On the ground floor of the Kelsterbach Town Museum, you can get an overview of the town’s history since the 16th century. A dedicated room focuses on the Main: river finds from different periods, objects associated with timber rafting and fishing, preserved river fish and ship models reveal different aspects of the river.

Among the collection’s highlights are numerous products from the Kelsterbach Porcelain Manufactory. Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt founded it in 1761; from 1765 to 1840, faience and stoneware were also produced locally. Another way to explore the past is through the Roman period: the museum documents the excavation of the provincial Roman building “Auf der Steinmauer,” dating from 220 to 260 AD. It is associated with a deer cult dedicated to the Celtic god “Cernunnos.”

A model in the town museum also shows the former Renaissance castle “Wolfenburg.” Count Wolfgang of Ysenburg-Ronneburg had it built between 1564 and 1580; it was destroyed several times during the Thirty Years’ War. Several beautifully restored half-timbered houses stand in Kelsterbach’s historic Unterdorf district. The museum collection and the Unterdorf offer different perspectives: here, you can encounter both specific finds and models, as well as historic houses in the townscape.

Tips for Your Stay

The Kelsterbach Town Museum is open on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. and by appointment. Check the opening hours before your arrival. Admission is free, including for special exhibitions and lectures. Visiting the Kelsterbach Main riverfront promenade is also free of charge.

When looking for accommodation in Kelsterbach, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: will your time be shaped more by the town’s history at the museum and in the Unterdorf, or by the landscape, nature watching and the themes explored along the Climate Route? This can help guide your further research towards the experiences you want to include.
