Trebur is especially rewarding to explore for its half-timbered houses and local history. Angular farmsteads shape the historic town centre. Along the main street and through small, quiet side lanes, you can see numerous buildings in the Franconian architectural style on a walk. If you are looking for accommodation in Trebur, consider whether your stay will focus more on the buildings in town or on a cycling tour through meadows and fields.

Half-Timbered Houses as Part of the Townscape

The museum is housed in a half-timbered farmstead built between 1680 and 1700. The two-storey building has exposed decorative timber framing; the ensemble also includes a courtyard, a crosswise barn and a garden behind it. The complex has largely been preserved in its original condition. The house, courtyard and barn give a clear impression of the farmstead as an architectural whole.

Trebur’s architectural history can also be read in other buildings. The two-storey half-timbered house at Astheimer Straße 8, characteristic of the townscape, was built around 1680 and has undergone few changes to its original structure. The historic town hall at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz 6 dates from 1577. The dates make it possible to compare the buildings chronologically: the town hall is considerably older than the two half-timbered buildings dating from around 1680.

Since 1997, Trebur has been part of the “From the Rhine to the Main and Odenwald” regional route of the German Half-Timbered House Road. This also connects the town to a larger half-timbered route. In Trebur itself, a walk along the main street and through the side lanes offers a direct way to see the buildings and the angular farmsteads in the historic centre.

History and Culture at the Museum

Founded in 1970, the Trebur Society for Local Heritage and History (Gesellschaft Heimat und Geschichte Trebur e.V.) informs the public about the history, culture and economy of the municipality of Trebur. Its activities include exhibitions, talks and guided tours. For a visit focused more closely on the municipality, these different formats offer various ways to explore historical and cultural topics.

The museum is open on the first and third Sunday of each month from 2 pm to 5 pm. Since opening hours can change, it is best to check the information before your visit. This makes it easier to plan a museum visit as part of your day; the historic buildings and a walk through the town centre offer further ways to focus on local history.

A Cycling Tour Through Meadows and Fields

As a change from looking at the half-timbered houses, consider a cycling tour from Trebur. It covers around three kilometres along a narrow road through meadows and fields, passing the picturesque Unterau farm.

Nature and Tours in the Wider Destination of Groß-Gerau

The wider destination of Groß-Gerau also offers a range of nature and tour-related attractions. The Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue European Nature Reserve lies in the west of Groß-Gerau district, along the Rhine. It is Hesse’s largest continuous nature reserve and serves as a breeding and resting ground for numerous resident and migratory birds. The Mönchbruch nature reserve lies between Rüsselsheim and Mörfelden-Walldorf in Groß-Gerau district and is Hesse’s second-largest nature reserve.

For longer outings, Groß-Gerau district has the Lutherweg 1521, which runs for around 31.5 kilometres there, as well as the Natura Trail Mörfelden-Walldorf. The “Kühkopf Tour” route suggestion runs along the Rhine in Groß-Gerau district and in Rheinhessen. Check the current conditions for each route before planning your trip. Ferries make it possible to extend tours beyond the natural boundaries formed by the Rhine and Main rivers; check the current timetable if you are planning a crossing.

Regional cuisine adds another distinctive touch: asparagus is considered a culinary hallmark of Groß-Gerau district. This allows you to combine Trebur’s half-timbered houses and local history with other themes in the wider destination, without limiting your outing to just one area of interest.
