The district of Groß-Gerau combines natural areas along the Rhine with regional trails, a layered history and a cuisine known for asparagus. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide what kind of stay you have in mind: Would you like to focus on nature, explore historical collections or combine different activities? The towns and themes across the district offer a range of ways to do so.

Natural Areas and Trails in the District of Groß-Gerau

In the west of the district, along the Rhine, lies the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue European Nature Reserve. It is Hesse’s largest contiguous nature reserve and provides a breeding and resting ground for numerous resident and migratory birds. This importance shapes the area’s distinctive connection with nature. The “Kühkopf Tour” also runs along the Rhine through the district of Groß-Gerau and Rheinhessen.

Another distinctive natural area is Mönchbruch, between Rüsselsheim and Mörfelden-Walldorf. This nature reserve is also in the district of Groß-Gerau and is the second largest in Hesse. The two areas can be distinguished by their location and status: Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue lies along the Rhine and is the state’s largest contiguous nature reserve; Mönchbruch is located between the two towns mentioned above.

There are also a variety of walking routes with different themes. The Luther Trail 1521 runs for around 31.5 kilometres through the district. If you are interested in landscapes and their recurring features, another option is the “Ebbelwoi-Päädsche,” a section of the Rhein-Main Regional Park between Esch and Wallerstädten, where you can see examples of these landscape features. The district is also home to the Mörfelden-Walldorf Natura Trail.

Crafts, Park History and Asparagus

In the town of Groß-Gerau, the Crafts Museum displays tools and archival material relating to trades once practised there. The exhibits illustrate the transition from purely manual work to the machine age. The museum thus offers a tangible insight into changes in working life, rather than telling the story through dates alone.

The Fasanerie in Groß-Gerau also has a clear place in history: it was a hunting reserve for the dukes of Darmstadt, and the park was created between 1722 and 1726. Since 1 July 2014, the Groß-Gerau City Museum has had a department featuring drawings, prints and paintings by Groß-Gerau artist Wilhelm Altheim (1871–1914). If you would like to include culture in your stay, you can explore the park’s history and an art collection as two different ways of looking at the past.

Asparagus is part of the regional cuisine and is considered the district’s culinary hallmark. In the wider region, the Gerauer Land Asparagus Days offer insights into the history and traditions of asparagus cultivation, and invite visitors to discover local specialities and the landscape of Gerauer Land. If you plan to attend, check the current event dates.

Activities and Practical Information

There is more to choose from than nature and culture. The district has three well-maintained golf courses for beginners and experienced players. Swimming options include indoor pools, outdoor pools and bathing lakes; facilities and access can vary by season, so it is advisable to check the conditions at each location. Ferries can extend your excursions beyond the district’s natural boundaries formed by the Rhine and Main. Check timetables and seasonal operating hours in advance.

Guided tours cover industrial history, Jewish history, environmental topics and urban development. For specific tours, check current availability and booking conditions. When choosing accommodation, you can match these interests to your planned activities: natural areas, trails, the museum and guided tours each offer a different focus, without requiring you to commit to just one kind of stay.

For travel by train, the RE 70 regional express connects Frankfurt (Main) Hbf and Mannheim Hbf via Groß-Gerau Dornberg and Biblis. Frankfurt Rhine-Main Airport is partly located within the district of Groß-Gerau. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current timetable, as connections and journey times may change.
