Brensbach can be explored along trails that connect the landscape and local history in different ways. The digital Bannoser Trail leads from the Alte Post through forests and tells the story of a distinctive local figure. The Historic Village Trail focuses on preserved buildings and objects; the R9 cycle route links Brensbach to a longer route through the Gersprenz Valley. These different ways of exploring the area sit side by side.

Along the Bannoser Trail

The digital Bannoser Trail starts at the Alte Post in Brensbach and follows a circular route of about 20 kilometres through forests, with far-reaching views, before returning to its starting point. Shortcuts let you choose the length of your route. A top hat marks notable points along the way; information boards at various stops tell stories of Bannoser’s pranks.

The story behind the name leads to Johann Heinrich Ritter. Born in Brensbach in 1807, the master shoemaker was known as “Bannoser” and became famous well beyond the boundaries of the municipality for his pranks. The boards bring this story to life along the way and give the route a local historical connection. Those interested in Brensbach’s local history will find this a different approach from a trail whose focus is primarily on its route.

Cycle route and views

The R9 cycle route runs from the Rhine at Worms to Obernburg on the Main. Through the Gersprenz Valley, it passes through Reichelsheim to Brensbach, then continues via Wallbach to Höchst. Brensbach is therefore one section of a route linking several towns and river valleys. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Wallbacher Vogelherd viewpoint on the B3 panoramic trail offers another view of Brensbach: from here, you can see as far as Brensbach and, on a clear day, Frankfurt. The trail descends to the Eberhardtsbrunnen spring and its shelter, then passes the Hinterwaldteich pond on the way back to the car park. The viewpoint, shelter and pond provide distinct stops along this route; it differs from the approximately 20-kilometre Bannoser circular trail.

Local history in the village

The Historic Brensbach Village Trail leads through the village, with information boards at each stop sharing insights into its history. The selected stops feature preserved buildings and objects that are significant to local history. One notable place is the Kirchhügel (Church Hill): this low, walled mound lies where the road from Höchst meets the village’s main thoroughfare and is considered the settlement’s original nucleus.

Literary remembrance is also part of Brensbach’s story. Local poet Karl Schäfer, a contemporary of Johann Heinrich Ritter, paid tribute to him in his novel “Eulenspiegel im Odenwald” (“Till Eulenspiegel in the Odenwald”). Together, the Kirchhügel, village trail and this literary tribute offer different insights into the village’s historical character.

These different focal points can help you plan your trip around your own interests.
