Sensbachtal: Winter Trails, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Sensbachtal
The Sensbacher Höhe offers a special blend of nature and history: a viewpoint on the ridge is recommended for visitors, and the small forest cemetery is considered well worth seeing. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and winter walks, while cycling and hiking trails offer more ways to experience Sensbachtal actively. This lets you plan your stay around the experiences that interest you most, rather than focusing on just one reason for a trip.
Winter Trails, Hiking and Cycling
The cross-country ski trail on the Sensbacher Höhe starts at the “Sensbacher Höhe” nature car park, at 520 m above sea level; a waxing and changing hut is available there. The northern trail runs along the ridge north of the Sensbacher forest cemetery. It is 4.5 km long, or 5.6 km with the Höhfeld loop. When planning, the key question is whether you prefer the shorter route or the longer option that includes the Höhfeld loop.
The winter walking options also differ in their format. Starting at the “Sensbacher Höhe” nature car park, one winter walk runs 2.8 km in one direction and is not a circular route. Another winter walk starts at the “Mühs” nature car park in the Ober-Sensbach district and can be walked as a loop. This makes a practical difference for planning: the first route’s one-way distance is given, while the second can be walked as a loop.
The Sensbachtal Panorama Trail is one of the certified circular hiking trails in Oberzent. Hiking options there range from easy to challenging, with trails leading through forested ridges and deep valleys. Another option for an active day is the Oberzent Loop through Sensbachtal: a moderately difficult 28 km cycle route with 530 metres of elevation gain. The moderate rating complements the distance and elevation figures with a clear indication of difficulty. As details may change if the route is redesigned, it is worth checking the current route before setting off.
Building History and Places of Remembrance
The small forest cemetery on the Sensbacher Höhe is on the road to Beerfelden. It was established at the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War; the year 1619 is inscribed above the entrance arch. The cemetery chapel acquired its present appearance in a renovation in 1744. The cemetery is also home to the Erbach-Fürstenau family crypt. The date, chapel and crypt each offer a different historical point of interest.
The Jagdschloss Krähberg (Krähberg Hunting Lodge) is associated with a different period. It is a regularly laid-out Late Baroque building complex, commissioned by Count Albert zu Erbach-Fürstenau and built between 1761 and 1771. The term “building complex” draws attention to the overall ensemble rather than just a single castle building. The cemetery’s origins and the construction project at Krähberg are far apart in time, so Sensbachtal’s history encompasses different eras.
