Schweringen offers three very different points of interest: insights into rural life and work, craft traditions, and a special Weser ferry. The local history room, Wurthscheune barn and Old Smithy each represent a different side of the town; the ferry offers a view of the Weser crossing. When choosing accommodation, it is worth first considering which experiences you would like to focus on: local history and crafts, a ferry crossing, or destinations in the wider Nienburg travel area.

Local History and Crafts in Schweringen

The Schweringen local history room depicts rural life and work from 1920 to 1950 across several rooms. Works by the artist Gottlieb Pot d'Or are also on display there. The Wurthscheune barn showcases agricultural tools and machinery. The Old Smithy focuses on exhibits related to shoemaking, saddlery and carpentry. Together, the collections range from rural everyday life and agriculture to several traditional trades, offering a varied look at the subjects that shape Schweringen.

The Weser Ferry and Tour Connections

The Schweringen Weser ferry is the last vehicle ferry on the Middle Weser powered by an electric motor connected to the mains. Cyclists and other visitors travelling for tourism use it to cross the Weser. If you would like to include the ferry crossing in your plans, check the current ferry times in advance. Another tour connection is the Church of the Cross (chapel) in Schweringen: it is a waypoint on the Achter Tour. This gives you two different ways to plan activities: a special river crossing and a designated tour waypoint.

Nienburg as a Separate Travel Destination

In the wider Nienburg travel area, the Nienburg Museum offers a broad sweep of history. Housed in three historic buildings, it traces the development of the Middle Weser region from the presence of the first humans to the present day. The Fresenhof, a 16th-century castle manor, is the museum’s main building. The museum also includes the Asparagus Museum, the Biedermeier Garden and a lapidarium; the Neoclassical villa offers deeper insights into the 19th century.

The Dinosaur Park Münchehagen offers a very different way to explore the past: more than 300 dinosaur footprints can be seen there, bearing witness to a time around 140 million years ago. The park offers hands-on activities, especially for young children, including the excavation of a 25-metre-long skeleton. Those interested in art and architectural history will find important art treasures at the Stiftskirche St. Maternian et St. Nicolai in Bücken, including a rood cross dating from 1230 and richly illustrated stained-glass windows from the 13th century. Loccum Abbey is a monastic house built in 1163; the historic barn quarter Im Schünebusch in Estorf preserves nine traditional barns.

The wider Nienburg travel area also offers different ways to enjoy active outings. A 23.6-kilometre circular route on the Weser Cycle Path runs between Landesbergen and Stolzenau; check route conditions before setting off. Flotte Mittelweser offers round trips, experience cruises and charter trips on the Weser and Aller, departing from Nienburg or Verden. This gives you two different travel ideas: a cycling route and a river cruise.

Then decide which experiences you would like to guide your choice of destination.
