Besitz lies at the confluence of the Sude and Krainke; farther west, both rivers flow into the Elbe. In the Elbe-Sude lowlands, dykes protect the village and parts of its farmland from backwater flooding from the Elbe; several farmsteads are located right beside the dyke. As a result, waterways and dyke lines are as much a part of the village landscape as its well-preserved rural architecture.

Hiking, Cycling and Village History

The idyllic dyke and polder landscape of the Teldau stretches from the church in Blücher through Besitz to the Elbe and is ideal for hiking and cycling. A dyke path runs along the Sude between Besitz and Timkenberg.

You can also explore the Wild Pastures around the Blücher Polder on foot or by bike. In the former polder, grazing animals are used primarily to maintain the landscape; these include water buffalo and Konik horses. Landscape management is another aspect of this polder landscape.

The village landscape also includes farmhouses belonging to former Hufen landholders. Of the original 26, three have been lost over the course of history; the character of the traditional Low German farmhouses has largely been preserved. Besitz thus has two distinct features: its riverside and dyke setting, and its well-preserved rural architecture.

Village Church, Views and Exhibition in Blücher

The neo-Gothic brick church stands in Blücher, a district of the municipality of Besitz. Its approximately 45-metre-high tower can be climbed. The top viewing level is just over 22 metres high and is reached by climbing 110 steps. These heights distinguish the full height of the church tower from the height of the viewing level, while the number of steps gives a concrete indication of the climb.

Since 2014, the tower has housed a permanent joint exhibition by the Blücher parish and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve River Landscape Elbe Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Across three exhibition levels, topics include the Schaale and Sude lowlands extending to the Elbe, the floodplain habitat, the future management of the river landscape, grazing projects and the LIFE project. The views and exhibition offer different reasons to visit the church tower.

As a rule, the tower and exhibition are open Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00 from May to September. From October to April, they are generally open Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00; visits are also possible by request. The church café, which hosts a cultural programme, is open from 14:00 to 17:00 on the first Sunday of every month from May to September. Check opening hours and café dates before your visit.

The Old Rectory as a Place to Stay

The Old Rectory is also located in Blücher and is a partner of the biosphere reserve. It offers a total of 22 beds in simply furnished rooms with two to five beds, with self-catering facilities.

Facilities include several bathrooms and showers, a kitchen with dining room, a lounge, two meeting rooms, and a natural garden with a new clay oven. These details give an overview of the building’s rooms and outdoor areas, while the simple furnishings and number of beds describe the overnight accommodation. This makes it possible to assess the offering according to various practical criteria without limiting your trip planning to accommodation alone.
