Elterlein: Mining History, Church and Erzgebirge Landscape
Accommodation in Elterlein
Elterlein brings together traces of silver mining, an elevated market square and trails into the Erzgebirge landscape. The town lies on a high plateau above the valleys of the Schlangenbach and Schwarzbach streams. When looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether your stay will focus more on history, culture or experiences in nature. Elterlein offers specific points of interest for all three.
Salt Road, silver mining and waterways
Elterlein developed along the historic Salt Road between Halle and Prague. In the second half of the 15th century, the town gained importance through silver mining. The waterways are also connected to the town's history: hammer mills, smelting works and mills were established early on in the valleys. Taken together, the Salt Road, mining and the early use of the waterways offer different ways to explore Elterlein's history. They show that the town's history is not limited to a single building or era.
Church and historic landmarks
St. Lawrence's Church was consecrated in 1481. Its 57-metre-high south tower was consecrated in 1891. From the tower gallery, you can see across the mountain-ridge landscape; access arrangements may vary, so check in advance. The Barbara Uttmann monument in the market square commemorates another historic figure. The former railway station is also part of the town's heritage: the complex includes a goods shed and outbuildings and is significant for its architectural and transport history.
Protected landscapes and nature in the districts
The Hermannsdorf Meadows are considered Saxony's oldest protected area; rare flora and fauna can be found there. In the district of Schwarzbach, the European Special Protection Area at Richterwald and the Schwarzbachtal natural monument are among the protected landscapes. A bison enclosure is also a local visitor attraction. Check current visiting arrangements before you go. This lets you take the nature attractions of Hermannsdorf and Schwarzbach into account when choosing your excursions, without conflating them with the historic sites in the town.
Hikes with different viewpoints
Two trails are described for hikers, each with its own viewpoint highlights. The circular trail around Hermannsdorf offers views of the peaks of the Upper Erzgebirge. The Great Panoramic Loop around Elterlein is characterised by numerous panoramic views of the mountain-ridge landscape. It passes through Schatzenstein, Friedrich-August-Höhe, Elterlein and Hermannsdorf. The circular trail around Hermannsdorf thus focuses on views of the peaks, while the Great Panoramic Loop combines panoramas with stops such as Schatzenstein and Friedrich-August-Höhe. Routes and trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Marked hiking and cycling trails also lead from Schwarzbach to the Organ Pipes on Scheibenberg, Schwarzenberg Castle and the Waschleithe visitor mine. Connections and conditions can change. From Hermannsdorf, Schlettau Castle and Geyer can be reached on foot; trail conditions can change here too. When planning, it is therefore important to consider which destinations interest you and which routes you would like to take to reach them.
Accommodation and getting around
When looking for accommodation in Elterlein, you can choose your focus based on the historic sites, natural areas, or hiking and cycling destinations. The bus is also useful for getting around: route 441 runs directly through Elterlein and stops at the market square. Transport information can change; check the timetable before you travel.
