Hennstedt brings together the gently rolling Geest and the broad, flat Eider lowlands. Bogs, marsh meadows, dikes, locks and pumping stations are also part of this landscape. The contrast between the Geest and the lowlands gives the surroundings distinctive contours and offers different impressions to consider when planning your trip.

Explore the landscape actively

An extensive network of signposted trails offers opportunities for hiking, horseback riding and cycling. Longer hikes and bike rides are among the activities you can plan in Hennstedt. If you enjoy walking, you can experience the landscape on longer trails; a day on a bike offers a different pace. Equestrian trails are also part of the network. The signs help you find your way, while the Geest, bogs and marsh meadows provide the scenic backdrop.

When planning, consider which kind of outing you would most like to do: a longer walk, a bike ride or a horseback ride.

The Eider as a place for recreation

The Eider around Hennstedt is associated with fishing and water sports; the municipality also describes the Eider landscape as a recreational area for visitors. This adds another possible focus to the trails on land. The specific activities available and the conditions that apply may vary. If you plan to go fishing or take part in water sports, check the options in advance.

Culture and history in the wider destination of Dithmarschen

In the wider destination of Dithmarschen, the Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf focuses on history. It takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the farmers’ republic to everyday rural life in the 1960s. This long period encompasses very different chapters of regional history. In addition, Museumslandschaft Dithmarschen brings together 19 professionally and voluntarily run museums in eleven locations.

Archaeology and hands-on activities are also among the topics covered there. The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park offers activities including flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewelry, making fire and baking bread. The activities on offer may vary. The Stone Age Forest lies next to the park: this natural outdoor site covers around 40 hectares and is permanently free to access. It is advisable to check access conditions before your visit. The Stone Age Forest in Albersdorf contains nine original archaeological monuments.

Hiking and the Wadden Sea in Dithmarschen

Two routes of different lengths offer options to compare when choosing a hike. The “Mötjensee and Sea Eagle” route near Lunden is an easy 12.79-kilometer loop for hiking in flat terrain. The first stage of the North–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail also runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometers long. The long-distance trail as a whole comprises five stages and runs from Meldorf to Kiel. This gives you a choice between a single circular walk and one stage of a multi-stage long-distance trail.

On the Dithmarschen coast, guided mudflat walks with knowledgeable local National Park mudflat guides reveal the diverse life of the Wadden Sea at low tide. Tides and guided tour dates vary, so check the available dates before planning your visit. Another place to visit is the Friedrichskoog National Park Station: an information center with a national park exhibition on the south side of the harbor. From Friedrichskoog, the Wadden Sea Conservation Station looks after the national park in southern Dithmarschen, between Meldorfer Koog and the mouth of the Elbe, along 30 kilometers of coastline.

Regional culture and events

In Weddingstedt, St. Andrew’s Church is one of the five so-called original parishes in Dithmarschen. Regional food and community life offer further points of interest: the KOHLosseum’s Krautwerkstatt holds demonstrations followed by tastings on Tuesdays through Thursdays at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. From November 1 until Easter, only the 2 p.m. demonstration takes place; check the schedule before visiting. During Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, events across Dithmarschen include farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sports and cultural events. Dates and individual program items may vary.

Hennstedt’s own highlights are its Geest and Eider landscape, its signposted trail network and recreational activities associated with the Eider. The museums, archaeological attractions and coastal topics offer further perspectives on the wider destination of Dithmarschen.
