More than 40 thatched-roof houses shape Drage’s village scene. The village is also home to a traditional farmers’ bell associated with the villages of Stapelholm. On the banks of the Eider, in Delje Koog, there is a bathing area with a sunbathing lawn, an almost sandy beach and a bathing jetty with a slide. This means that the village offers both characteristic architectural heritage and a specific place to enjoy the water.

Village Scene and Eider Riverbank in Drage

The thatched roofs give the village a distinctive architectural feature; the farmers’ bell adds a tradition associated with Stapelholm. As you explore Drage, you can experience these as two distinct aspects of the village. At the bathing area, meanwhile, the sunbathing lawn, beach and jetty offer another way to spend time by the Eider. Check the condition of the facilities on site before your visit.

Nordfeld lock is also a useful landmark in the area: it can be crossed on foot or by bicycle and connects North Frisia with Dithmarschen. You can therefore choose between two ways of making this crossing. Access conditions may change temporarily, so check them before planning to cross.

North Frisia: Coast, Islands and Halligen

The wider travel destination of North Frisia opens up a broader landscape. North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. There are also ten Halligen, a distinctive type of landscape within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is also an official nature reserve and is part of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. The coast, islands, Halligen and tidal flats offer a variety of regional themes to consider when planning a trip.

Visitors can experience a rich variety of birdlife, for example at Hauke-Haien-Koog. Another natural environment is Hallig SĂĽdfall, which covers 50 hectares: it lies in Zone 1 of the national park and has a largely natural landscape. SĂĽdfall may only be visited as part of a guided tour, either on a guided walk or with the mudflat carriage operators. If you would like to visit this Hallig, take this access requirement into account when planning your trip.

Guided Tours, Culture and Regional Specialities

The SchlĂĽttsiel information centre has a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours about the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dyke follows. If you are particularly interested in this dyke walk, keep an eye on the weather conditions. National park information centres in North Frisia also offer exhibitions and events about the national parks and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

Culture is another regional highlight to consider: among the districts of Schleswig-Holstein, North Frisia has the highest density of museums and the largest number of registered cultural monuments. A culinary speciality of northern North Frisia is Pharisäer: hot coffee with a shot of rum and a topping of whipped cream. These regional examples range from nature and exhibitions to a distinctive local speciality.

Cycling and Excursions in the Wider Travel Destination

Two regional cycling routes can be compared by length. The Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The Stollberg-Koog Tour starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck-Haus and covers 35 kilometres. The second route is therefore eight kilometres longer, and the stated starting points also differ. The “Eiderstedt Countryside Tour” (“Eiderstedter Landpartie”) runs through North Frisia’s wide marshland, offering quiet routes, nature and glimpses of rural life with cows and sheep.

For longer-distance orientation, the North Sea Cycle Route runs through North Frisia and forms part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”. North Frisia can also be reached by bicycle via the international long-distance Grenzroute cycle route. Excursion boats depart from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as for the seal banks. Check the timetable when planning your trip.
