Grothusenkoog lies directly on the North Sea coast and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. The village is situated on the dike, with views towards St. Peter-Ording, Vollerwiek and the Eider Barrage. Eichenhof is home to an Icelandic horse farm, and longer cycling tours follow the dike and pass through the green countryside of the Eiderstedt peninsula.

Icelandic horses, riding grounds and beach riding

Eichenhof in Grothusenkoog welcomes guest horses and offers riding grounds. For travellers with their own horse, the option to accommodate guest horses is a practical point of reference; anyone interested in riding can include the grounds in their day’s plans. Riding opportunities are also available in neighbouring St. Peter-Ording. A permit is required for beach riding there.

Eichenhof also hosts an annual qualifying tournament for the Icelandic Horse World Championships. If the tournament is relevant to your trip, check the event dates separately before travelling. This lets you plan your stay around the date you want without conflating general riding opportunities with the competition schedule.

Cycling along the dike and across Eiderstedt

Longer cycling tours showcase a variety of landscapes: they follow the dike, offering views of the North Sea, and also pass through the green countryside of the Eiderstedt peninsula. When planning your day, you can choose between the coastal perspective and the peninsula’s green inland areas.

North Frisia as a wider landscape setting

The broader destination of North Frisia opens up views of a larger coastal region: North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum, among others. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, distinctive landscapes within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an officially designated nature reserve and is also part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. In North Frisia, the Beltringharder Route (27 kilometres from Lüttmoorsiel) and the Stollberg-Koog Tour (35 kilometres from the Amsinck-Haus in Reußenköge) differ in length and starting point.

North Frisia offers other specific opportunities for observing nature. At Hauke-Haien-Koog, for example, visitors can observe a diverse variety of birds. The Schlüttsiel Information Centre features a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a guided tour of the sea dike follows; this part of the offer is therefore weather-dependent.

The 50-hectare Hallig Südfall is another regional natural attraction. It lies in Zone 1 of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and has a largely unspoilt landscape. Südfall may only be entered as part of a guided walk or with the Wadden Sea horse-drawn carriages. A visit therefore requires one of these guided options.
