Winnert lies in the Bredstedt-Husum Geest, also known as the Ostenfeld-Schwabstedt Geest, on the edge of the Schleswig Geest. Large farmsteads, some of them historic, shape the village landscape. Wildes Moor is another destination for excursions, alongside the village itself. The area’s rural architectural heritage and natural environment thus offer two distinct aspects of the destination.

Farmsteads and Cultural Monuments

Four residential or farm buildings are listed as cultural monuments. Together with the large, partly historic farmsteads, they show how Winnert’s architecture is shaped on two scales: by the farm complexes that define the village landscape and by individual listed buildings. Those interested in architectural heritage can take both aspects into account when exploring the village.

Wildes Moor: Nature and Trails

Wildes Moor is one of Winnert’s excursion destinations. More than 90 bird species have been recorded there, including 50 breeding species. Moor frogs, European tree frogs, grass snakes, and adders also find refuge in the moor. The birdlife and habitats for amphibians and reptiles offer different reasons to explore the area’s natural environment.

Several entrances and routes lead through Wildes Moor. The Eider-Treene-Sorge cycling route runs directly through the moor. The moor nature trail provides information about its history and the role of peatlands in biological climate protection. Picnic areas are located beside the Treene and at a junction in the moor. When planning an excursion, you can therefore consider the route, information about the moor, and possible places to take a break together.

Routes and Orientation

The Viking-Frisian Way passes through Winnert and runs between St. Peter-Ording on the North Sea and Maasholm on the Baltic Sea. The two routes therefore cover different distances: the Eider-Treene-Sorge cycling route leads through Wildes Moor, while the Viking-Frisian Way places Winnert on a route between the North and Baltic Seas.

As of September 2023, there were no dedicated trail signs for hiking routes around Winnert. At that time, waymarking in Wildes Moor was rudimentary and not always up to date. Check your orientation on site.

Getting There by Bus and Train

The local transport information from September 2023 lists bus route 146 between Ohrstedt, Winnert, and Ostenfeld, with Husum shown as an extension. Route 160 runs every two hours on Saturdays and Sundays from 08:00 to 20:00 towards Erfde or Husum. The nearest train station is in Husum. Check bus timetables before your trip.

Winnert in the Wider Destination of North Frisia

North Frisia provides the wider regional setting. The region has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr, and Amrum. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, distinctive landscape formations within the national park. These coastal, island, and Hallig landscapes add to the picture of Winnert’s Geest and rural village setting without replacing its own themes.

When choosing accommodation, you can first decide what you would like to focus on: Winnert offers Geest, partly historic farmsteads, and Wildes Moor as an excursion destination; the wider destination of North Frisia adds the coast and islands as distinct areas of interest. Consider which landscape and cultural theme you want to shape your trip.
