Altkirchen: Village Museum and Outdoor Pool
Accommodation in Altkirchen
Altkirchen offers two distinct reasons to visit: the village museum explores local history, rural life and nature; the outdoor pool adds a seasonal focus on sport and play. You can plan your trip around your cultural interests, swimming days and the conditions for each visit.
The Village Museum: Village Life, Traditional Dress and Nature
The Altkirchen Village Museum has five exhibition rooms displaying more than 2,000 exhibits across around 300 square metres. The permanent exhibition spans four rooms. Information panels and historical objects offer insights into the origins of the villages and connect historical context with tangible artefacts.
The exhibits include tools for working the soil, tools used in traditional local crafts, and furnishings from rural households. A particular highlight is the Altenburg farmers’ costume, with a bride’s elaborately decorated headdress. The varied collection offers several points of interest, from agricultural work to clothing and domestic life.
The fifth room houses a natural history cabinet offering insights into the flora and fauna of the surrounding area. Examples from the collection include core samples and the “Göllnitz Wonder Tree.” This nature theme complements the museum’s cultural history displays.
Visits to the village museum are possible by prior arrangement with Thomas Brand at 0152-09418489. Please arrange your visit in advance.
Outdoor Pool with Sports Pool and Play Area
The Altkirchen outdoor pool has a 50-metre sports pool for active swimmers. Next to it is a separate non-swimmer area with a children’s slide and various play facilities. The separate areas make it possible to enjoy different kinds of swimming during a single visit.
The facilities also include a well-maintained sunbathing lawn for sunbathing and picnics, a beach volleyball court, table tennis tables, a kiosk and an adjoining playground. Alongside swimming, visitors can choose from play and exercise options, as well as space for a break outdoors.
Visitors can use the outdoor pool from May to September. Check the latest opening information before your swimming day. For planning your trip, it is important to note the difference from the museum: museum visits require prior arrangement, while the outdoor pool operates during its stated season.
More Experiences in the Wider Schmölln Destination
In the wider Schmölln destination, the Button and Regional Museum offers a distinct cultural history focus. It showcases raw materials used in button-making, equipment and historical machinery. In the eventful history of Schmölln’s button industry, buttons made from tagua nuts played a special role. St. Nikolai’s Church in Schmölln, built in the 15th century, offers another way to explore the town’s history.
For families, the Sprotte Water Adventure Trail offers a different way to discover Schmölln and its surroundings: the route runs from Posterstein Castle to Schmölln and is nine kilometres long. It features twelve interactive stops and activities, including a mill-themed playground, bridges and fords, the Weidendorf and a Kneipp trail. The route has only gentle gradients and is particularly suitable for families.
There is another swimming option in the wider Schmölln destination: the TATAMI leisure pool has a 400-square-metre water area and a 25-metre swimming pool. By comparison, the sports pool at the Altkirchen outdoor pool is 50 metres long. TATAMI also offers a Japanese-style sauna area with several themed saunas and a steam room.
Plan Travel Dates and Accommodation to Suit Your Trip
When looking for accommodation, consider what you want to focus on during your stay: a visit to the Altkirchen museum, which requires prior arrangement; the outdoor pool season from May to September; or other cultural and aquatic activities in the wider Schmölln destination. Plan around the visits you want to make and check current accommodation offers before booking.
