Posterstein – Castle Museum, Church and Trails
Accommodation in Posterstein
Posterstein combines a castle museum, church art and trails through the village and countryside. A visit to the museum includes the castle dungeon and a climb up the keep; outside, routes lead through the half-timbered village, across fruit meadows and through small patches of woodland. This offers a choice of different highlights for your stay: cultural history or outdoor activity.
Castle Museum: Cultural History and Views
On the upper floor of Posterstein Castle, the museum presents exhibitions on the cultural history of the region, including an exhibition about the history of the Duchess of Courland’s salon. Some exhibitions may change. A museum visit includes access to the castle dungeon and a climb up the 25-metre-high keep. From its viewing platform, you can enjoy views across the Altenburger Land in any weather.
The late Gothic Posterstein Church also offers a distinctive perspective on the village’s history: the lords of Posterstein Castle built it, and since the 16th century it has been a branch church of Nöbdenitz. Its Baroque wood carvings adorn the altar, pulpit and gallery with plant motifs and Christian symbols. Alongside the castle exhibitions, the church’s architecture and religious furnishings are also highlights.
Exploring Posterstein on Foot
The Holzmichel Trail is just under four kilometres long and leads through the half-timbered village of Posterstein, under a motorway bridge built in 1938, and to the suspension bridges on the Sprotte Adventure Trail. The route returns to Posterstein via the RothenmĂĽhle and past the cemetery. It crosses fruit meadows and passes through small patches of woodland. There is a shelter, viewpoints and rest areas along the way.
The Sprotte Water Adventure Trail runs from Posterstein Castle to Schmölln. The nine-kilometre route has twelve interactive stations and activities about life by the water. The routes’ different lengths and themes offer distinct highlights: the Holzmichel Trail passes through the village and countryside, while the Sprotte Water Adventure Trail focuses on its waterside stations.
Family Exhibition and Activities
At Posterstein Castle, the family exhibition “The Children’s Castle” features interactive and engaging stations. Children can explore history through play, from the time of the knights to the era of the salon ladies. The museum also offers regularly changing special exhibitions, special holiday programmes and activities for schools; children’s birthday parties can also be held there. If you are planning a specific date, check the latest programme details in advance.
When planning your trip, you can give different weight to culture and activity: the castle and church offer history and distinctive furnishings, the Holzmichel Trail is a route just under four kilometres long, and the Sprotte Water Adventure Trail features interactive stations along a total of nine kilometres. These highlights can help you decide whether to choose Posterstein as a destination and then look for a place to stay.
