Oppershausen: Moated Castle History and Circular Walk
Accommodation in Oppershausen
Oppershausen has a prominent historical landmark: in 1395, Richard von Sebecke had a moated castle built here. St. Mary’s Church and the castle park provide another local focal point for a circular walk.

Oppershausen in the Regional Context
Oppershausen has been part of the Wartburg-Hainich World Heritage Region since 2023. In the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination, the Unstrut-Hainich district is also part of this World Heritage Region. This gives you two scales to consider when planning your trip: Oppershausen’s local history and hiking route, as well as other regionally dispersed themes.
More Experiences in the Wider Unstrut-Hainich Destination
The treetop walk offers a nature experience in this region: the path runs 24 metres above the Hainich canopy, and the view from the treehouse stretches across the national park. Those who are comfortable with heights can climb the tree tower to a platform 40 metres up, with views from there across the Hainich to the Thuringian Basin. The two heights offer different perspectives on the forest and landscape.
The treetop walk begins 200 metres from the Thiemsburg National Park Centre. There is a large hiking car park, a food and drink establishment, toilets and a public transport bus stop there. As on-site services can change, check them again before travelling. The National Park Centre’s exhibition uses films, large-format image panels, interactive experience stations and other interactive elements. A fully accessible media guide is also available; tablets and headphones can be borrowed.
Mühlhausen offers a different focus with its urban history: notable features include eleven medieval churches and a preserved inner city wall ring with numerous defensive towers. A 2.2-kilometre section of Mühlhausen’s oldest, inner city wall remains. The viewing platform of the Raven Tower stands 34.2 metres high and offers panoramic views across Mühlhausen and the surrounding area. The Thuringian Pharmacy Museum in the Rosenthal House is devoted to the history of pharmacy from the 18th to the 20th century and covers 276 m².
Botanical collections are the main attraction in Bad Langensalza. The Rose Garden features almost 450 rose species and varieties across a former factory site measuring 18,000 m². Rare cacti and yuccas from South America can be seen in the Botanical Garden. The region’s garden themes are therefore quite distinct: here, a large rose collection shapes the scene; there, the plant life of South America takes centre stage.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Plans
If the circular walk is the deciding factor, keep its starting and finishing point, Kammerforst, in mind too. That way, you can tailor your search to the main focus of your trip.
