At the heart of Sundhausen is a large village green covered in grass. Linden and chestnut trees alternate around it; the open green space and ring of trees give the village center a distinctive shape. If you’d like to get to know the village, this is a good starting point for discovering Sundhausen’s rural character.

The community festivals also add their own special touches: the events calendar includes a Pentecost festival with the raising of the maypole, a traditional Easter bonfire, and a Christmas market. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the dates in advance.

Nature and Outdoor Activities in the Wider Unstrut-Hainich Destination

The Unstrut-Hainich district is part of the Wartburg Hainich World Heritage Region. In the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination, you’ll find different ways to experience nature and the landscape. On the treetop trail, you can walk 24 meters above the Hainich canopy; from the tree house, the view extends across Hainich National Park. The tree tower takes visitors who are comfortable with heights up to a platform 40 meters above the ground, with views across the Hainich to the Thuringian Basin. A walk through the treetops and a climb to the higher platform offer two distinct experiences at different heights.

The treetop trail begins 200 meters from the Thiemsburg National Park Center. The center has a large hiking parking area, a restaurant, restrooms, and a public bus stop. The exhibition presents its content through films, large-format image panels, interactive stations, and hands-on exhibits. The center also offers a fully accessible media guide; tablets and headphones are available to borrow. As facilities and services may change, check the latest information before your trip.

The Betteleichenweg trail in the national park offers a different blend of nature and cultural history. It passes highlights such as Ihlefelder Kreuz, Eiserne Hand, and Ihlefeld, and runs through blooming stands of wild garlic and corydalis in spring. Erlebnis-Draisine offers another kind of experience on Route 1, which crosses the 244-meter-long, 24-meter-high Lengenfeld Viaduct with its eight arches. Check whether the route is available before your trip.

Gardens, Museums, and Urban History in Unstrut-Hainich

In Bad Langensalza, garden culture goes hand in hand with botanical highlights. The Rose Garden features nearly 450 rose species and varieties on the site of a former factory spanning 18,000 m². At the Botanical Garden, you can discover rare cacti and yuccas from South America. The two gardens thus offer different highlights: a large rose collection and plants from another part of the world.

The museums also offer different ways to explore history. The Thuringian Pharmacy Museum in Haus Rosenthal covers the history of pharmacy from the 18th to the 20th century across 276 m². The small museum at Opfermoor Vogtei displays original finds from archaeological excavations of the settlement and the cult site. The Rope-Making Museum, in turn, preserves a landmark of the traditional rope-making craft of Schlotheim in a faithfully reconstructed spinning workshop.

Medieval buildings shape Mühlhausen’s cityscape: the city has eleven medieval churches and a surviving inner city wall ring with numerous defensive towers. A 2.2-kilometer section of the oldest, inner city wall still survives. The observation platform on the Rabenturm, 34.2 meters above the ground, offers an overview of Mühlhausen and the surrounding area. The city thus brings together religious architecture, fortifications, and expansive panoramic views as distinct reasons to visit.
