Schwindegg’s Schloss Schwindegg castle is a clear focal point for the area’s cultural history. The enclosed four-wing building, the so-called outer castle, and the imposing buildings immediately around it represent several phases of construction. A short walk along the Goldach goes around the complex and adds a specific walking route to the view of its architecture.

Several phases of construction at Schloss Schwindegg

The enclosed four-wing building of Schloss Schwindegg, with its corner towers and gate tower, was built on older foundations between 1594 and 1620. A four-wing building is a complex made up of four building wings; here, it is described as an enclosed structure. The corner towers and gate tower provide further specific details about the form of the castle complex.

The castle includes the so-called outer castle, with two stable wings dating from around 1750. The imposing buildings immediately around Schloss Schwindegg are former residential or farm buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries and form part of the protected castle ensemble. This places the construction of the castle between 1594 and 1620, buildings from two centuries, and the stable wings from around 1750 in chronological context. The castle, outer castle, and surrounding buildings thus convey different aspects of the building’s history rather than reducing it to a single construction date.

A short walk around the complex

The walk starts at the former castle inn, now the BĂĽrgerhaus (civic centre), and follows the Goldach south. It then goes around the Collegium Augustinum care home; the return route is along the pavement on RimbachstraĂźe. This offers two complementary ways to experience the castle ensemble: the buildings provide historical dates, while the route description sets out a specific sequence through the area around the complex.

MĂĽhldorf Am Inn: Town History, Culture and Nature

The wider travel destination of Mühldorf Am Inn offers other points of interest. Mühldorf a. Inn’s 500-metre-long town square is lined with colourful façades in the Inn-Salzach architectural style. The Salzburg High Fountain in the square commemorates a gift from Salzburg’s prince-archbishop Johannes Ernst von Thun in 1692. At the entrance to the square stands the Nagelschmiedturm, also known as the Münchener Tor; it is the town’s oldest building.

The history of the wider travel destination also includes the two “Traidkästen” grain storehouses, the Haberkasten and Kornkasten, with the courtyard between them. They were built in the 15th century to store grain; the Haberkasten was later converted into a cultural centre. Since 1999, the courtyard has hosted the summer festival every year during the first two weeks of July. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the dates for the relevant edition.

The exhibitions offer different perspectives, too: the permanent exhibition “Alltag, Rüstung, Vernichtung” (“Everyday Life, Armament, Extermination”) at the Geschichtszentrum und Museum Mühldorf a. Inn explores the history of the Mühldorf district during the Nazi era. The exhibition “Lebensader Inn” (“The Inn: Lifeline”) shows how people have lived alongside the river and how it is used today. The cultural offer across the wider travel destination therefore ranges from town history and architecture to different perspectives on the region’s past.

There are also dedicated activities focused on nature and exercise. The Innaue nature trail has eleven interactive stations and connects the town of Mühldorf a. Inn with the recreational area south of the Inn. As a circular route, educational trail, and walking path, it is suitable for pushchairs and families. Facilities at the Mühldorf outdoor swimming pool include a swimming pool, a non-swimmer pool, a children’s paddling pool, a water slide, and a beach volleyball court. Visitors can cross the Inn on the historic, cable-operated “Josef III” tow ferry.
