In Baitenhausen, pilgrimage history meets a variety of trails through the landscape. The pilgrimage church of Maria zum Berg Karmel stands above Meersburg’s Baitenhausen district. Nearby, hiking and cycling routes invite you to discover the area from different perspectives—from the Kirchweg, with its flights of steps, to a longer circular hike.

Pilgrimage Church and Baroque History

The pilgrimage church of Maria zum Berg Karmel was consecrated in 1704. From its location, you can see across the Salemer Valley to Heiligenberg Castle and the Gehrenberg. The Baroque chapel on Baitenhausen’s Schlossberg is also closely connected with pilgrimage: in 1702, chaplain J. G. Rodt had it built for a pilgrimage that had already existed since the late Middle Ages.

The main altar of the pilgrimage church houses a Gothic devotional image; the ceiling paintings are by J. W. Baumgartner. Traditional pilgrimage days are St. Wendelin’s Day on October 20 and the Scapular Feast on the Sunday around July 16. The building’s history, devotional image and paintings each provide a distinct art-historical point of interest, while the traditional pilgrimage days reflect the religious character of the place.

Hiking Trails with Different Stages

Hiking Trail 5 runs from Grasbeuren via Schiggendorf and the Baitenhausen pilgrimage chapel to MĂĽhlhofen and back to Grasbeuren. The sequence of places helps you find your way if you want to include the chapel as a stop on a route. Another option is the circular hike around the villages north of Meersburg: it runs from Meersburg to the Baroque chapel in Baitenhausen, is 11 kilometres long, takes about three hours and includes 170 metres of ascent.

This circular hike passes through vineyards and orchards and offers views of the Salemer Valley, Lake Constance and the Alps. At the thermal borehole point, it joins the Way of St. James. The route combines specific trail details with views of the landscape and distant scenery; the approximate duration and stated ascent also give you a basis for fitting this hiking day into your travel plans.

The route to the pilgrimage church is also clearly described within the village: from the centre of Baitenhausen, the circular trail follows Kirchweg past the cemetery and up to Schlossberg. After 95 steps, you reach the church. This stretch differs in scale and orientation from the approximately three-hour circular hike—a useful comparison when choosing between a walk within the village and a longer outing.

Blossom Trail, Bees and Cycling Route

A signposted blossom trail was established in 2008 in the meadow adjoining the Baitenhausen teaching apiary. The apiary presents the history of beekeeping using historic beehives and occupied observation hives. Alongside pilgrimage history, therefore, beekeeping and its historical forms are among the themes that shape Baitenhausen.

The cycling route “Scenic Bike Tour through Beautiful Natural Landscapes” climbs uphill to Baitenhausen. A signposted spur leads from the route to the chapel; along its forest section, the route passes the bee nature trail. If you’d like to add a bike ride to your travel plans, you’ll find a dedicated route description here, with two specific points to help you find your way: the turnoff to the chapel and the bee nature trail in the forest.

More Culture in Meersburg

Meersburg itself also has notable cultural landmarks. The New Palace was the Baroque residence of the Prince-Bishops of Constance. Its monumental staircase was built to a design by Balthasar Neumann; the palace offers panoramic views across Lake Constance. This combination of residential history, architecture and views adds a distinct cultural dimension to Meersburg.

At the Fürstenhäusle in Meersburg, the authentic furnishings, including Biedermeier-era furniture, and insights into the life and work of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff provide another cultural-history focus. The Fürstenhäusle also offers views across Lake Constance. Together with the New Palace, it offers a way to give your stay a cultural focus that includes Meersburg as well as Baitenhausen’s pilgrimage church.

Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Plans

When looking for accommodation, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: is the pilgrimage church and its art history the main attraction, are you planning a hike with a stated duration and elevation gain, or would you also like to include the cycling routes and the subject of beekeeping? Details about the routes, steps and landscape offer different points of reference for planning your days, without requiring you to fit every experience into the same day.
