Heiligenberg: Panoramic Views and Castle History
Accommodation in Heiligenberg
Heiligenberg’s elevated landscape can be experienced on walks and circular hiking trails, alongside its distinctive castle history. At 788.2 metres, Amalienhöhe is the highest point in Heiligenberg. It offers wonderful panoramic views and is a popular destination for walks.
Panoramic Trails and Views
Two named circular trails are available for hikes through the elevated landscape. The 13.6-kilometre Panorama Trail I leads through Heiligenberg and offers beautiful views. At 6.4 kilometres, Panorama Trail II is less than half as long; this circular hike also passes through the elevated landscape and affords beautiful views. The distances allow for a direct comparison without reducing the two trails to different landscape experiences.
The Monastery Trails offer a different focus: they lead to various sacred buildings and viewpoints in the municipality of Heiligenberg, combining experiences of nature and history. In the area around Heiligenberg, a hike to Friendship Cave on a fine day is also a special tourist experience. Along the way, you can look towards the castle and down into the valley.
Heiligenberg Castle and Culture
Between 1560 and 1575, Heiligenberg Castle was transformed from a late medieval castle into a Renaissance palace. The castle chapel is an important monument to the German Renaissance and the history of the Fürstenberg family; it has served as the family’s burial place since 1586. The Knights’ Hall is also part of the castle’s history and offers views of Lake Constance and the Alpine range.
Music and cinema add to the town’s cultural offerings. The “Musik & Kultur Heiligenberg” association presents a varied programme spanning different styles. A programme of events is available for 2026; individual events may change.
Outdoor Excursions and Winter Activities
Heiligenberg’s outdoor swimming pool is located in the Linzgau region at an altitude of 730 metres and offers wonderful views extending to the Alps. Winter sports depend on sufficient snow: when conditions allow, Heiligenberg has a downhill ski slope with a lift and more than 20 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails. If snow sports are important to your plans, check snow conditions before travelling.
The Wider Bodenseekreis Region
The wider Bodenseekreis travel region stretches from almost the entire northern shore of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg to the Upper Swabian Hills and, in the east, the Westallgäu Hills. The Bodenseekreis has 57.7 kilometres of Lake Constance shoreline. Its landscape is shaped by the lake and the neighbouring hills, with orchards, vineyards, meadows and forests.
Distinctive cultural destinations in the Bodenseekreis include the Unteruhldingen Stilt Houses, Germany’s oldest archaeological open-air museum, and Salem Abbey and Castle. Salem Abbey was founded as a Cistercian monastery in 1134. The visitor route at the stilt houses includes the ARCHAEORAMA multimedia show, featuring a virtual dive to the stilt houses in Lake Constance. The site also includes the DISCOVERY TRAIL, with a stilt-house cinema where experimental archaeologists introduce visitors to historical house-building techniques. The Eriskirch Marsh offers a contrast in nature: it is the largest and most valuable nature reserve on the German shore of Upper Lake Constance and offers opportunities to experience local nature.
