Mörfelden-Walldorf: Lakes, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Mörfelden-Walldorf
Mörfelden-Walldorf brings together trails, water and cultural history. Circular routes offer varied views, while lakes and protected landscapes add their own natural highlights. There is also art in the park and a glimpse into the city’s history. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would prefer to focus on outdoor activities or on culture and history.
Hiking, cycling and enjoying the water
There are 24 hiking routes around Mörfelden-Walldorf, each offering different views. Another point of reference is the hiking trail marked with a red fox, which passes by Mönchbruch. The nearby Mönchbruch nature reserve has its own distinctive character: its many paths and tree-lined avenues invite you to enjoy long walks and extended bike rides.
The area in and around Gundwiesensee is a protected area. Oberwaldsee and Schnepfensee form a waterscape with numerous fish species and a diverse range of birds and plants. Their water surfaces cover 12 hectares at Oberwaldsee and 3 hectares at Schnepfensee. Here, you can enjoy bodies of water of different sizes amid a richly varied natural setting.
Oberwaldberg offers panoramic views across the region. The Regionalpark circular route, which runs along Oberwaldsee, provides a different perspective on the landscape. The two places offer contrasting highlights: a view across the region at one, and a trail beside the lake at the other.
A just under 2.4-kilometre circular trail runs along the Walldorfer See bathing area and is suitable for a walk. So, alongside longer hikes and bike rides, there is also a clearly defined route for a stroll. The distance is approximate; when planning, you can think of the circular trail as a manageable walk in its own right.
There are various options for cycling, too: you can ride along the Gundbach through the Gundwiesen between Gundwiesensee and Gundhof. The Tree of the Year Avenue between Forsthaus and Oberwaldberg can be explored on foot or by bike and offers opportunities to learn. In addition, the Groß-Gerau district cycling route network connects Mörfelden-Walldorf with neighbouring municipalities via more than seven routes.
An annual nature tradition is the planting of the respective Tree of the Year by the city of Mörfelden-Walldorf together with the German Forest Protection Association. You can also encounter this connection to the Tree of the Year in the avenue of the same name, which combines outdoor activity with learning.
Art and local history
At the Mörfelden Museum, you can learn about the city’s history and the everyday life of Mörfelden from the first traces of settlement in the Bronze Age onwards. The rest of the permanent exhibition focuses on the daily lives of Mörfelden’s residents from around 1870 to 1945. This historical perspective therefore spans the earliest traces through to the more recent past.
At the sculpture park in Bürgerpark Mörfelden on Parkstraße, the Sports and Culture Office and the Friends of the Sculpture Park jointly present object art, sculptures and installation works by artists from different generations. The specific selection varies with each edition. The park complements the historical insights with an encounter with different forms of art.
Since 1986, the Hüttenkirche has stood between the Mörfelden and Walldorf districts. The Hüttenkirche and two original elements of the former runway wall are prominent features of Mörfelden-Walldorf’s post-war history. Together, these three elements are regarded as symbols of one of Germany’s largest environmental movements to date. A visit can also be combined with an interest in the area’s more recent history.
The wider natural landscape of Groß-Gerau district
It is worth looking beyond Mörfelden-Walldorf to the Groß-Gerau district. In the west of the district, the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue European Nature Reserve lies along the Rhine. It is Hesse’s largest contiguous nature reserve and serves as a breeding and resting place for numerous resident and migratory birds.
If you want to take different interests into account when travelling together, the local attractions offer several options: walks and viewpoints, longer trips on foot or by bike, waterscapes, as well as museums and art.
