Nauheim can be explored through two distinctive themes: the history of the town and the recreational area around Hegbachsee. The local history museum gives culture a tangible home, while the lake is all about relaxation and nature. For your stay, you can weigh up different interests for excursions and decide which ones should shape your itinerary.

Music history at the local history museum

The Nauheim Local History Museum is dedicated to the town’s history. Its musical instrument department contains nearly 200 instruments from various historical periods. In the coach house, old machines and tools—most of them associated with musical instrument making—offer another perspective. The collection and the equipment used for the work each emphasize different things: one focuses on the instruments themselves, the other on the tools and machines involved in making them.

This makes for a clear cultural element in your travel plans. A visit to the museum offers a different experience from a day devoted mainly to enjoying the outdoors.

Relaxation and nature at Hegbachsee

Hegbachsee is a popular recreational destination for the surrounding municipalities. The recreation area includes campsites, a weekend home settlement, places to eat and drink, sunbathing lawns, a playground, and a children’s paddling pool. This mix combines play and outdoor activities with opportunities to relax and enjoy a meal or refreshments. Families can make time at the lake a focus of their vacation plans.

Nature along the shore also gives the area its character: a diverse range of plants grows there. Hegbachsee provides a habitat, resting place, or hunting ground for many water-associated bird species. Nature and recreation coexist here, without the lake needing to be described solely as a swimming destination. Hegbachsee is also home to a DLRG children’s outdoor pool with a teaching pool. If you plan to visit, check current availability beforehand.

Sound Trail and Regional Park

Nauheim’s recreational offerings also include the Sound Trail, a recreational attraction in the Rhine-Main Regional Park. Nauheim is also connected to the Regional Park Circular Route. It is 190 kilometers long and links 35 municipalities, offering a much broader regional perspective than a single excursion destination.

The Regional Park routes are signposted throughout and feature activity stations and information boards. The Regional Park Circular Route follows well-maintained paths away from roads. It offers a different perspective from a visit to the local history museum or leisure time at Hegbachsee: the focus here is on a route that connects numerous municipalities across the region.

Nature in the wider destination of GroĂź-Gerau

The wider destination of Groß-Gerau has other natural areas, each with its own character. Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue European Reserve lies in the west of the Groß-Gerau district along the Rhine. It is Hesse’s largest contiguous nature reserve and serves as a breeding and resting site for numerous resident and migratory birds. Mönchbruch Nature Reserve lies between Rüsselsheim and Mörfelden-Walldorf in the Groß-Gerau district and is Hesse’s second-largest nature reserve. Both areas are part of the wider regional natural setting, not features of Hegbachsee described here.
