Zierenberg combines striking architectural history with a landscape shaped by mountains, basalt and open dry grasslands. The small town, officially recognised as a health resort, lies in the Warme Valley in Habichtswald Nature Park. The 578-metre-high Dörnberg rises to the east, and the 601-metre-high Bärenberg to the west. Kassel is about 20 kilometres away. When planning your trip, you can choose between historic sights and nature trails of various lengths.

Half-timbered houses, the town church and historic buildings

The historic town hall was built in 1450 by master builder Henrich Brant and is considered the oldest surviving half-timbered town hall in Hesse. Zierenberg’s town church has a longer construction history: work on the Gothic-style church began in 1293 under Landgrave Henry I. Its west tower is 45 metres high.

The church features wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries. They were uncovered again in 1934; extensive restoration work followed from 1958 to 1961 and again from 1997 to 2006. A guided tour of the town church can be booked, focusing on its construction history and historic paintings. It is also possible to climb the tower and visit the tower keeper’s room. From there, the view extends to the Dörnberg massif and the Warme Valley.

Another historic building is the Steinhaus, also known as the Steinkammer, Steinscheune or Steinwerk. It is considered the oldest house in Zierenberg and was built around 1300. The town hall, church and Steinhaus offer different points of reference in time: from the house built around 1300, to the start of construction on the town church, to the 15th-century half-timbered town hall.

Dörnberg, basalt and views

The landscape of the Dörnberg nature reserve also reflects its geological origins. Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk and Tertiary formations shape the terrain. Botanically notable dry grassland communities have developed on shallow, stony soils. Nature and landscape enthusiasts will find more than rocks and distant views here: there is also distinctive geology and plant communities adapted to it.

The Habichtswaldsteig Zierenberg H2 loop is 16.5 kilometres long. You can start at any point along the route; the information hut at the Dörnberg hiking car park in 34289 Zierenberg is a recommended starting point. Along the way, the route passes a large basalt scree field known as the “Blue Stones”. It also leads to the three striking basalt rocks of the Helfensteine. From there, the view stretches across Zierenberg to the Waldecker Land and as far as Reinhardswald and Kassel.

The Alpenpfad near Zierenberg offers a shorter route: this easy circular trail in Habichtswald Nature Park is five kilometres long, and the stated duration is about one hour and 30 minutes. The trail has no climbs and passes through open scrubland as well as shady stands of spruce and pine. Its character also includes wide-ranging, varied views of the surrounding area. Compared with the 16.5-kilometre H2, it offers a shorter loop to consider when planning your trip.

Another viewpoint is the Schreckenberg Tower above Zierenberg, on the 461-metre-high GroĂźer Schreckenberg. The medieval watchtower was rebuilt in 1911 after falling into disrepair and renovated in 1991. From the viewing platform, you can look out over Zierenberg in the Warme Valley.

Planning your trip

Opened in August 2009 in the former youth centre, the Habichtswald Nature Park Centre explores the nature, history and geology of the nature park, as well as leisure and event offerings. The historic buildings and two circular trails provide different starting points for exploring the area.
