Altwarmbüchen: Moorland, Lake and Local History
Accommodation in Altwarmbüchen
Altwarmbüchen reveals itself through two natural features: the raised bog and the Altwarmbüchener See on its edge. Scots pines, downy birches and visible peat cuttings lend the landscape a variety of aspects. There is also a circular trail, naturally landscaped shore areas and water sports activities. The history of the Evangelical Lutheran Christophorus congregation adds another perspective on the area to the focus on nature.
Raised Bog, Woodland and Small Bodies of Water
The Altwarmbüchener Moor is a raised bog, much of it covered with Scots pines and downy birches. The Altwarmbüchener See lies at its edge; its naturally landscaped shore areas are suitable for walking and nature observation. The lakeshore is therefore a place to enjoy the landscape and get active, while the bog has its own distinct character, shaped by its vegetation.
Old peat cuttings are visible in the bog, where small open bodies of water have formed. These water areas are among the visible traces of the peat cuttings and differ in scale from the lake. Those interested in landscape features will find more than a wooded bog here: the visible changes in the terrain are also part of the raised bog’s character.
A Loop Around the Altwarmbüchener See
The lake covers 48 hectares and is 7 to 12 metres deep. A 3.5-kilometre circular trail runs around it. The fixed route length offers clear guidance for anyone planning a lakeside walk into their day. Whether you walk briskly or take your time is up to you.
The lake has a 3,000-square-metre sandy beach and 30,000 square metres of lawns for play and sunbathing. This gives visitors access to different-sized areas along the shore for leisure and relaxation. As recreational facilities may change, check the latest status before your visit if these areas are important to your plans.
The sailing yacht and surf school at the Altwarmbüchener See offers courses and rents out boats and boards. This means you can plan to enjoy water sports during your stay, rather than experiencing the lake only from the circular trail. If you are planning a course or rental, check the current offer in advance; the available arrangements may change.
The Green Ring and Getting There
The Altwarmbüchener Moor–Tiergarten section of the Green Ring can be reached on light rail line 3 to the Altwarmbüchen terminus. If you would like to include this section in your stay, you can take this light rail connection into account when planning. This information relates to this section of the Green Ring and is not a general statement about all paths in the bog or by the lake.
A Historical Connection to the Area
The Evangelical Lutheran Christophorus congregation in Altwarmbüchen was founded in 1969. Its founding year adds a specific historical note alongside the landscape-related themes. This gives visitors more to explore than the bog, lakeshore and activities, also including the history of a local congregation.
Choose Accommodation Based on the Experiences You Have Planned
This way, you can choose your base according to the experiences that matter to you, rather than combining everything the lake, bog and Green Ring have to offer into a single itinerary.
